WDW Prep To Go - a Disney World planning podcast

I'm just wrapping up a trip to Disneyland and wanted to tell you how it went, plus who I'd recommend going there instead of Disney World.

I've also got a quick tip submitted by a listener on getting character autographs without standing in line.

These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for a better explanation.

MY DISNEYLAND TRIP REPORT

Hear about what we did, where we stayed, why I love Disneyland, and who I recommend it for.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

A listener named Shannon shared that she was able to get some character autographs by handing an item to a Cast Member at the character meet-and-greets which might come in handy in some situations and save some waiting time.

Free Dining is Disney's most popular promotion and there's a lot of competition to get 1 of the rooms that are eligible for the discount. Today I have tips on increasing your chances of getting it for your trip.

I also have a quick tip about why I might suggest making two sets of dining reservations for each day of your vacation.

These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for a better explanation.

INCREASING YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING FREE DINING

Free Dining is a package promotion (meaning you book a hotel and park tickets) that's been offered for the last several years. I recommend booking more than 180 days before your trip and putting down only a deposit when you book (explanation on why I recommend that is below).

People often ask if they should include the Disney Dining Plan when booking and I'd suggest that you include it if you'll get it regardless of the promotion. If you only want the DDP if it's free, I wouldn't book it ahead of time.

Some tips for getting Free Dining:

You need to travel during the promotion dates
Free Dining is usually a fall promotion that takes place from late August through mid-December (with some blackout dates during that time). As long as you check in by the last date the promotion is offered, you should be able to use it throughout your trip.

People checking in before the promotion dates will need to book a split stay in order to use it (so you'd essentially end up with the the first part of your trip booked without Free Dining and the last part would include it).

Stay in a participating hotel
Most Disney resorts participate in Free Dining, although Port Orleans French Quarter and the Art of Animation Little Mermaid rooms are rarely/never part of it.

However, there are a limited number of rooms available at each resort so I'd recommend staying flexible when planning your trip in case you end up needing to switch to a different resort.

Take advantage as soon as the promotion is announced
Since the promotion is so popular, you'll need to take advantage ASAP.

One way to do that is to have a Disney Visa card which allows cardholders to book a few days before the general public.

In order to be notified of new promotions, I recommend signing up for the email alert list on the monthly dashboard for the month you're traveling and I will send you a message anytime a promotion is announced for that month, including Free Dining.

If you booked your trip with a Disney travel agent, they should get the discount for you and apply it to your existing reservation.

If you're handling it yourself, I recommend that you book a new package online since changing your existing package to use the new promotion will require a phone call and the phones are always super busy when it's announced. Once the phone lines quiet down a few days later, you can call to cancel your old reservation.

This is why I recommend only putting down a deposit when you book your first reservation ahead of time: so that you don't have lots of money tied up in a package that you may end up canceling and having to wait for a refund on.

Doing that will not have a negative effect on your dining reservations or any other reservations you've booked.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

Although early morning breakfast reservations in the parks have long been a good idea, I'm hesitant to suggest them since Disney has been changing park hours so the parks (especially Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios) often open up at 8 a.m.

Instead, I'd suggest booking a later time or booking 2 sets of reservations: 1 at 8 a.m. and another around 10:30 a.m. and then you can cancel closer to your trip once you know what the schedule will be.

There are so many things to do in the parks at Disney World, but that doesn't mean you have to spend all of your time there. Today I have suggestions on what you might want to do outside of the parks.

I also have a quick tip about recording video on your phone during your trip.

These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for a better explanation.

WHAT TO DO ON NON-PARK DAYS

Most people who are searching for non-park things to do are those with longer trips. There's a chart on my planning infographic that shows how I suggest allocating your days for various trip lengths.

Some ideas:

  • Take a break, sleep in
  • Tour the resorts (see my article on how to tour resorts for some ideas)
  • Go to Downtown Disney and bowl, shop, see a movie or visit DisneyQuest
  • Play mini golf at 1 of the 2 onsite courses
  • Go offsite to visit another theme park, Cape Canaveral, a beach, or 1 of the other many things within driving distance.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

Record video with your phone turned horizontally since that's the orientation used on computers and TVs.

I asked podcast listeners to have their kids submit questions for a podcast episode and today I'm answering many of the questions that were sent in.

I also have a quick tip on a free souvenir that you can get on Disney transportation.

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS SUBMITTED BY KIDS

Which restaurants are best for kids?
Most Disney World restaurants are good for kids, but character meals are often the most fun since you get to meet characters while eating.

How do the bracelets work?
MagicBands at Disney World use RFID chips that allow you to scan them to get into the parks, to go on rides with FastPass+, and get ride photos.

What is the most fun restaurant at Disney World?
It's hard to pick just 1, but I'd say Chef Mickey's is my favorite pick for most people.

What is there for teens to do at Disney World?
Episode 53 is about doing Disney World with older kids which might be helpful. With older kids, I like Boardwalk-area hotels, adding Universal to a Disney World trip, and including them in the planning.

If my mom can't get Anna and Elsa FastPass+, what is the best way to see them? Also, what is the best way to meet Belle?
Be sure to check The Dibb for FastPass+ availability and read my article on how to get difficult FastPass+ reservations. If you still can't get a FastPass+, I'd suggest showing up for Extra Magic Hours to meet them or just meeting them first thing on a regular park hours day.

There are 3 places to meet Belle: in the France section of the World Showcase (where she's in her blue and white dress), at Akershus, and at Enchanted Tales with Belle.

Have they updated the Magic Kingdom pirate scavenger hunt or Perry the Platypus Epcot scavenger hunt since March 2014?
A Pirate's Adventure: Treasure of the Seven Seas takes place in the Adventureland section of Magic Kingdom and hasn't changed much. Agent P's World Showcase Adventure at Epcot had its technology upgraded in June 2014 from clamshell phones to smartphones.

How do they keep the bugs and rodents out of Disney World?
Disney World Cast Members spray twice a day to try to keep mosquitoes away. Here's an article with more info that might be useful.

If I want to get a job at Disney World, how would I do that?
You can participate in the Disney College Program or just search for openings on DisneyCareers.com.

How do people get lost in Disney World?
Kids should try to stay close to parents at all times, but if they get lost, they should look for a Cast Member as they are trained to deal with lost children.

Parents should find a way to make sure their cell phone number is on their child, such as a temporary tattoo or dog tag.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

Transportation cards are free souvenirs that you can get from Cast Members on the monorails, boats and buses. Not all will have them, but it doesn't hurt to ask since sometimes they will have them to give out.
