WDW Prep To Go - a Disney World planning podcast

There are always things that happen during Disney World trips that are less-than-ideal and people traveling during the first part of the year often have to handle more of that than anybody else.

Today, we'll talk about how to deal with closures, refurbishments and other disappointments during Disney World trips.

I also have a quick tip about shopping for Disney World trips when it's not summer where you live.

These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for a better explanation.

DEALING WITH DISAPPOINTMENTS

People traveling in the first part of 2014 are having to put up with a lot of changes at Disney World which include:

  • The normal refurbishments that take places this time of year
  • Festival of the Lion King being closed for 6 months (reopening in summer 2014)
  • Magic Kingdom monorail closures from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. on weekdays beginning January 21 until the end of March (the Epcot monorail will remain open like normal)
  • Construction at The Polynesian as a new DVC section is built
  • Miyuki the candy maker retired
  • The afternoon parade at Magic Kingdom is gone (the new one will open mid-March)
  • FastPass+ is being rolled out fully this month to all guests - including those staying off-site - and legacy FastPass machines are being removed

So how do you deal with all of that?

Well, here are a few ideas:

  • Attitude. "There are 2 ways to be happy: improve your reality or lower your expectations" is a quote I recently came across and it's a good strategy when approaching a Disney World trip that might have some disappointments. Parents in particular should make sure to frame everything in a positive way to help kids see it that way.
  • Make new plans. If necessary, change your plans a bit. You might consider renting a car, switching to a different hotel or changing your trip dates.
  • Focus on other things. Take the time you would have been doing something that will be closed (like seeing Festival of the Lion King) to do something else you might not have (like seeing Finding Nemo - The Musical).
  • Research and stay flexible. Know as much as you can ahead of time about the changes and then make a plan but stay flexible during your trip.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

Is it cold where you are but you're headed to warm Florida for a trip? It's likely that your local Target isn't selling shorts, swimsuits and personal misting fans then. If you need to buy some of those things, be sure to look on eBay which often has a good assortment year round.

There are several special things you can be chosen for at Disney World like parades, shows and park openings.

Today, I've got an interview with somebody whose family has been chosen for all of those things. She shares her experiences and tips on getting picked for these special things that can bring a little extra magic to your trip.

I also have a quick tip that will let you know a shortcut to exiting one of the nighttime shows.

These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for a better explanation.

INTERVIEW WITH JODY WILLIAMS

Jody has a blog at http://toddjodybrent.blogspot.com where she details the various experiences they've been chosen for.

In this episode, she discussed being part of the Animal Kingdom parade, opening 3 of the parks and being part of the Indiana Jones show at Hollywood Studios.

Jody also shared some of her tips for increasing your odds of being chosen which include wearing matching shirts, being willing to say yes to what Cast Member's ask (and without hesitation), arriving early and sometimes just a stroke of luck.

Here's a video showing the Cast Member named Barbara who Jody mentioned. She makes me happy to watch.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

When you enter the theater for the Fantasmic! show at Hollywood Studios, you come in from the top left part of the theater. When you exit, go out the top right of the theater which will take you right to the front of the park.

After months of planning your Disney World trip, what should you be doing in the final days before you leave?

I get asked that question a lot so I have some tips on doing that which will allow you to kick off your trip as relaxed as possible.

I also have a quick tip about an easy way to make sure you always have cold water while you're at Disney World.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE YOUR TRIP

I think your goal should be to start your trip off as relaxed and unanxious as possible. Try to move into vacation mode so you're ready to have a fun trip.

Here are some suggestions for doing that:

  • Pack a week ahead of time, using the Ultimate Disney World Packing List to help you remember everything you want to take with you
  • Although most info is available digitally, print off all hotel, dining and FastPass+ reservation info
  • Figure out if you want to buy snacks to take along or have them delivered through a service like GardenGrocer.com
  • Finalize your touring plans so you're not worried about that during your trip
  • Make a final To Do List of little things that still need to be done and don't wait until the last minute to do them
  • Give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport. You never know if there will be busy traffic or long airport security lines. Consider using vacation travel bagsfor kids which can keep them busy once you arrive at the airport gate.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

Just about anywhere at Disney World (including small kiosks) will give you cups of ice for free. I like doing this as an alternative to carrying water bottles which can be heavy, especially if you need several bottles of water for your family.

Although I like most things at Disney World, there are a few things I don't like very much.

Today, I tell you about those 5 things which include resorts, rides and a restaurant.

I also have a quick tip of the day about something you should look for at Hollywood Studios.

These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for a better explanation.

THE 5 THINGS I DON'T LIKE AT DISNEY WORLD

  1. The All-Star Resorts (Music, Sports and Movies). If the goal is to stay at the most affordable location on-site, Pop Century is usually a better option since it has its own buses to the parks that don't share with other resorts.
  2. Primeval Whirl at Animal Kingdom. This ride is just not fun to us and with the relatively high height requirement of 48" and the often long lines, it is just not worth it to me.
  3. Animal Kingdom's afternoon Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade. Compared to the parades at Magic Kingdom, this one is just boring, long, repetitive and usually uncomfortably hot.
  4. Stitch's Great Escape at Magic Kingdom. This attraction which involves strapping you down and then burping on you is the most disliked attraction at Disney World (just read the Yelp reviews to see for yourself).
  5. Dinner at Be Our Guest in Magic Kingdom. Although lunch at Be Our Guest is my favorite Quick Service meal, I don't like dinner at Be Our Guest. It is the most difficult reservation to get and with inconsistent service and food plus the lack of character interaction at your table, I just don't think it's worth it.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

Look for the Singing in the Rain umbrella near the Lights, Motors, Action show at Hollywood Studios. If you stand on the pad underneath, it will usually make rain start to fall which makes for a fun photo op.

INTERVIEW WITH KENNY THE PIRATE

  • Kenny's app can be found at CharacterLocator.com
  • Graphs and wait time data
  • Recommended FastPass+ for characters: Rapunzel at Princess Fairytale Hall in Magic Kingdom (Cinderella is easier to meet other places), Ariel (meet her early or use FastPass+), unique character options exclusive to FastPass+ that will be coming in 2014 (Winnie the Pooh and Tigger in Epcot, Minnie at Hollywood Studios, Character Landing at Animal Kingdom)
  • Kenny recommends not using a FastPass for Character Spot at Epcot
  • Kenny's character interaction ideas

Kenny's top 5 favorite character experiences:

  • 5. Chip and Dale - fun to interact with anywhere you can find them as they compete with each other
  • 4. Citizens of Hollywood at Hollywood Studios
  • 3. Tremain family - not listed in any Disney publication, exact times available through CharacterLocator.com, usually only available in the morning
  • 2. Gaston at New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom
  • 1. Scoop Sanderson on Main St. at Magic Kingdom

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

Lots of people ask if they should use online check-in when staying at Disney Resorts. This is an option 60 days before your trip begins. I recommend doing it to save time at check-in unless you want to ask for a room upgrade.

After a reader named Misty left a comment on the Facebook Page about being so excited for her family's first trip to Disney World that they might actually pee their pants, I wanted to chat with her to see what her plans were.

After she got back, I chatted with her again to see how it all went.

You can hear all about that and I have a quick tip of the day about when I suggest booking flights for your trip in relation to when discounts are announced.

These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for a better explanation.

MISTY'S TRIP

In this episode, a reader named Misty talks about why they decided to go to Disney World when they did, why they chose to stay at The Contemporary, some of the meals and special events they planned and why she was surprising her kids at 4:30 a.m. the day of the trip.

You'll also hear what Misty thought after her trip including frustrations with My Disney Experience functionality, the things that ended up being their favorite, things she wished she had done and a lot more.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

When booking your trip, I recommend waiting to book flights (if possible) until after discounts for your trip dates have been announced. Sometimes when discounts are released, they don't cover your exact trip dates but would work if you could modify your trip dates slightly.

If you already have flights booked, this isn't always possible since flights are usually nonrefundable and unchangeable. If it makes sense for your trip, try to wait to book flights to allow for maximum flexibility (don't wait too long though - I recommend booking flights around 2 months or more before your trip).

The last step in my 6 step planning process is to add extra magic to your trip.

Today, I have some ideas for how to add extra magic to make your trip even more fun. Although it is definitely optional, it can often help create memories that your family will never forget.

I also have a quick tip on avoiding some crowds at Magic Kingdom as you walk down Main St.

EXTRA MAGIC IDEAS

There are lots of ways to add extra magic to your trip but here are a few of my ideas:

Give stuff to other people
Bring some glow sticks to Disney World with you and hand them out to kids along the parade route. Or bring little party-sized bottles of bubbles and hand those out (or just blow bubbles in the direction of some kids who might be having a hard time waiting and would be entertained by it).

Or anything else you can think of that would be fun to hand out and make somebody's day better.

Play Tinker Bell
Playing Tinker Bell is sort of like being Santa Claus during your trip.

The idea is to have gifts arrive each day from Tinker Bell which may or may not be tied to a few rules you set beforehand.

Some ideas for gifts include water toys for a water park day, glow toys for a day when you'll be out at night, Disney shirts that you bought before your trip, new pajamas (Target often has Disney PJs), Disney gift cards so kids can buy their own souvenirs or a pressed coin book to collect all of the pressed coins that you get throughout your trip.

Not only can this encourage good behavior but it can save money on souvenirs since you're buying things before you get to Disney World.

Try to get picked for special events
There are lots of things at Disney World that you can be chosen to be part of like parades, park openings and shows. It takes some luck but you can increase your odds by arriving early, having a good attitude and wearing matching shirts.

Read the Williams family blog for stories about things they've been chosen for and tips on how they did it.

Be or use a Fairy Godmailer
Fairy Godmailers are people who mail postcards from Disney World to people who will be going at a future date. You can be a Fairy Godmailer and/or receive a postcard from one.

This thread on DISboards.com is where you can go to volunteer to be a Fairy Godmailer and ask to receive a postcard. If that thread gets closed for being too long, there will be another opened to continue.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

My quick tip of the day is that if you're walking down Main St. at Magic Kingdom and the streets seem really crowded, look at the sidewalks to see if they are less crowded. People often stick to the street so the sidewalks can be a great way to get down Main St. with less people around you.

I get asked several times a week if various things are "worth it" at Disney World.

That's a hard question to answer without knowing somebody's personality or budget.

Today, I've assembled a list of 5 things that I think are worth doing for nearly everybody visiting Disney World.

I also have a quick tip about a secret entrance into 1 of the parks.

These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for a better explanation.

THINGS THAT ARE "WORTH IT"

1. Upgrading to a Preferred room at Value and Moderate Resorts
Value and Moderate Resorts are reallllly big (except for Port Orleans French Quarter), and the amount of walking can be decreased by paying a little bit extra for a Preferred room.

At Art of Animation, Preferred rooms aren't an option but you can request rooms that are closer to the main building by looking at the map below.

artofanimationmap

2. PhotoPass+ (now called Memory Maker)
The ability to get all of your PhotoPass pics, ride photos and printed photos at some character dining locations makes PhotoPass+ a great value. You can read more about PhotoPass+ to get details on how it works.

3. Character meals
Being able to multi-task eating a meal while meeting characters makes them a great option for most people. In particular, taking princess-loving children to have breakfast with the princesses at Cinderella's Royal Table or Akershus is usually a big hit.

4. Disney Dining Plan
Having a pre-paid Disney Dining Plan makes a Disney World trip feel all-inclusive and can make it much more fun. For people wanting to maximize their credits and get the best bang-for-the-buck, I recommend reviewing the menus at various restaurants and seeing which ones have the more expensive meals.

For example, Wolfgang Puck Express at Downtown Disney has delicious pizzas that feed 2 people and only cost 1 Quick Service credit.

5. Taxis
For $10 or $12, you can save yourself a lot of time (especially after nighttime entertainment when lines are often the longest) and get where you're going in just a few minutes.

You can use the taxi estimator to get a closer dollar amount for routes you might take.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

If you are at the turnstiles at Animal Kingdom and the turnstiles seem really busy before the park opens, you can try a secret-ish entrance by entering Rainforest Cafe and navigating to the gift shop. Just outside of the gift shop, there is a set of turnstiles available to use.

This method doesn't always save time but is worth a look if the main turnstiles seem particularly busy.

6 MISTAKES I'VE MADE

Over the years, I've made several mistakes when planning Disney World trips. Here are 6 of them.

Mistake #1: Not allowing enough time for transportation
Allow for at least 1 hour to get anywhere. Having your own car or taking a taxi can reduce that but you should still allow 30-45 minutes each way.

Check out my guide on how to navigate with Disney transportation for more info.

Mistake #2: Choosing dining that's not close to where you are
In the 6 step planning process, I advise you to make a daily plan and then choose your dining. The reason I suggest that is so you are making dining choices based on where you'll be and not running around to your dining reservation.

Mistake #3: Planning too much
Be realistic about what's possible, pare down your plans and allow for some unplanned time.

Mistake #4: Not including all family members in pics
Use PhotoPass photographers to take your pics and/or hand your camera to the photographers to take your pics.

Get more info on how PhotoPass works.

Mistake #5: Booking flights based solely on cost
Consider flight schedules and reduce the number of connections if at all possible. Use FlightStats.com to research the reliability of flights before you book.

Read my tips on finding the best flights for your trip.

Mistake #6: Not using resort check-in
You don't have to be taking Magical Express to use resort check-in when flying home from your Disney World trip. Anybody flying home on a participating airline can use resort check-in which will allow you to bypass bag check at the airport.

For more detailed info on Magical Express and Resort Airline Check-in (including which airlines participate), read my guide that covers all of the info.

PROS AND CONS OF USING AN AGENT

People interested in using a Disney travel agent should look at agencies that are authorized Disney Vacation Planner designated. The logo below will appear on the websites of those agencies.

Pros of using a Disney travel agent

  • Knowledge. Disney agents have to complete training and most have been on many trips.
  • Free to use. Agents are paid a commission by Disney at no additional cost to you.
  • Can save you money. Agents know about current promotions and can apply them to your reservation, reducing the cost of your package.
  • Agents book dining and special event reservations. Don't want to wake up early 180 days in advance to make reservations? You can let the agents do that for you.

Cons of using a Disney travel agent

  • Giving up control. Trusting somebody else with your travel arrangements can be hard for some people.
  • Changes go through the agent. You can't make changes to your package by going through Disney. You have to go through your agent.
  • Agents have to use Disney systems. Agents can book packages through Disney's systems but can't help you to rent DVC points or get many types of reduced-priced tickets.

SOME TIPS

  • Don't use a general agent. General agents almost never know enough about Disney World. If you're a AAA member, use AAA for discounts and not as a source of Disney World knowledge.
  • My recommended agent. The agent I recommend is named Cheryl and you can fill out the request a quote form which will be sent right to her or one of her trusted associates.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

Families who want to book a room that will allow their kids to sleep in separate beds at Disney World have these options:

  • Animal Kingdom Lodge and Wilderness Lodge rooms with bunk beds. You'll need to request this on your reservation.
  • Art of Animation and All-Star Music suites have 3 sleeping areas including a Master bedroom, pull-out couch and Murphy-style bed.
  • Ft. Wilderness Cabins accommodate up to 6 people and have a double bed, bunk beds and a Murphy bed.
  • Port Orleans Riverside rooms in the Alligator Bayou section have a trundle that can fit a child up to 10 years old or so.
  • Most Deluxe rooms have a daybed in addition to the 2 Queen beds.

Lots of people plan their Disney World trips around celebrating a special event.

Today, I've got tips for extra things you can do for those special occasions, including some free options and some that are expensive but highly customizable.

I've also got a quick tip on how I suggest booking those hard-to-get reservations so that you have the best chance of getting them.

These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for more information.

WAYS TO CELEBRATE AT DISNEY WORLD

Here are some ideas for ways to acknowledge your special occasion:

  • Get free buttons. There are free buttons available for many occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, 1st visit, etc.) available at Disney resorts and guest services in the theme parks. You can also make your own using my templatesfor special occasions that aren't covered with the buttons Disney provides.
  • Note your occasion on all dining reservations. Make sure your special event is noted on every dining reservation and tell the Cast Member when you check in as well. Many restaurants do special things like give you autographed cards and/or special birthday desserts, though it's not guaranteed.
  • Order a cake. For a more predictable dessert, you can have a custom cake prepared. This is available at most Table Service restaurants. You have the choice of lots of flavors, sizes, themes and occasions. Please see the DisneyFoodBlog.com cake ordering FAQ for all of the details.
  • Order something from DisneyFlorist.com. This is the only company that can deliver to your resort room. They can do everything from gift baskets to decorating the whole room.
  • Plan a special event with GiftsofaLifetime.com. You can have something special delivered to someone at an attraction, have them plan a scavenger hunt, etc. Anything you can imagine, they can help you pull off.
  • Buy Mickey ears. You can buy Mickey ears themed for birthdays, bride/groom, special characters, etc. Getting them at The Chapeau at Magic Kingdom is usually the best option. Monogramming is available.
  • Get a child's first haircut. At Harmony Barbershop in Magic Kingdom, there's a package for a child getting their first haircut. The package is $18 and includes a certificate, pouch of your child's hair and Mickey ears. You can book that by calling 407-WDW-PLAY.
  • Book a cruise. Illuminations and Wishes cruises are pontoon boats for up to 10 people that take you on a boat ride and then you watch the fireworks show from the boat. These cruises cost $346 and you can add birthday decorations for an additional $25. I recommend booking these 180 days in advance by calling 407-WDW-PLAY.
  • Book the Her Royal Highness Package. This package is available at Cinderella's Royal Table and includes a princess balloon, tiara, birthday cake (Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Tiana or Cinderella). It costs $112 on top of your meal and the contents of the package can be revised if needed. Book by calling 407-824-4477 or email wdw.crt.special.events@disney.com. You'll need to book at least 7 days before you will be there.
  • Have a birthday party. Goofy's Candy Company in Downtown Disney has 1.5 hour parties you can book for up to 12 people ages 3-12. You can choose between princess and science themes and the cost is $367 ($25 extra per person over 12, up to 15 people total). The party includes a treat, build-a-cup, glow accessories, autographed pics, games, balloon, invitations, thank you notes, and a gumball machine or glass slipper. You can book by calling 407-WDW-BDAY.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

I recommend booking your reservations online 180 days before your trip begins because the website is available 1 hour earlier than the phone lines (the website is available at 6 a.m. vs. 7 a.m. for the phones).

I recommend having your DisneyWorld.com account setup before this day and have your credit card handy for those reservations that require it. I would also suggest having the phone number on hand (407-WDW-DINE) in case the website is having technical issues.

Disney World provides free transportation to get between the theme parks, resorts and Downtown Disney but...

...how do you put it all together and figure out the best way to get between places during your trip?

I've got tips on how to do that plus a quick tip that will help you keep your pants dry.

DISNEY WORLD TRANSPORTATION

One of my biggest mistakes on our first Disney World trip was not understanding how to navigate with Disney World transportation.

  • There are 3 main forms of Disney World transportation - buses, monorail and ferries
  • People staying in a Value Resort, Moderate Resort, Animal Kingdom Lodge and a couple of DVC resorts will be using buses to get anywhere from their resort (Port Orleans resorts can take a boat to Downtown Disney)
  • Pop Century, Art of Animation and Animal Kingdom Lodge have their own buses and don't share with other resorts
  • People staying at Deluxe Resorts use a combo of buses, ferries, monorail and walking
  • Downtown Disney does not have buses directly to the theme parks (although there's currently a test until the end of October 2013 for a bus that goes directly between Animal Kingdom and Downtown Disney starting at 3 p.m. daily)
  • Downtown Disney and all theme parks have buses to all resorts
  • To get between resorts, you need to figure out the connection point that you'll use (theme parks and Downtown Disney serve as connection points). The map below (click to make it bigger) can help you figure out the best connection point.

Special transportation situations:

  • When traveling to Ft. Wilderness, you will need to take the internal buses there to get where you're going so plan for that added layer of transportation that doesn't exist at other resorts.
  • For early character dining reservations, character dining buses begin running around 6:30 or 7 a.m., even though Disney says that their buses begin 1 hour before the parks open.

OTHER FORMS OF TRANSPORTATION

There are a couple of ways to travel that are an additional cost for your trip but can be really convenient.

  • Rental cars - can get these at the Orlando airport or at the WDW Car Care Center on-site.
  • Taxis - recommended for early reservations (especially when traveling between resorts) and after nighttime shows. Use the taxi fare estimator to estimate the cost.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

Take a towel from your hotel room and pack it in your backpack. Use it to wipe off wet seats, save a spot for a parade, provide shade to a little one in a stroller or whatever other reason you find.

As the new FastPass+ system has rolled out, people have had lots of questions about how it works.

Today, I've got a list of pros and cons of the new FastPass+ system and a quick tip on how to remember your trip.

OVERVIEW OF FASTPASS+

The new FastPass system is called FastPass+ which allows on-site visitors to reserve rides up to 60 days ahead of time online (off-site visitors can reserve 30 days ahead of time), through an app or at a kiosk in the theme parks.

PROS OF FASTPASS+

  • It'll be easier to arrive later since you won't need to be there early to get FastPasses when they can be reserved at a later time ahead of time.
  • There are more opportunities to use FastPasses including Fantasmic, parade viewing, more rides and Be Our Guest lunch.
  • You won't have to zig-zag as much since the FastPasses are reserved ahead of time so you won't have to run across the park to grab them.

CONS OF FASTPASS+

  • You can only get FP+ for 1 park per day and 3-4 FP+ per day. (Update: this is no longer true.)
  • You will probably only be able to choose 1 headline attraction per day. (Update: tiers are in place at Hollywood Studios and Epcot, but not the other 2 parks.)
  • Less spontaneous, can't re-ride things.
  • Smartphones are sort of required.
  • Can't give or receive FP+ to other people.
  • Can't get FP+ for the same ride twice. (Update: this is no longer true after you use your first 3 FP+ reservations as your 4th FP+ can be any ride, including one you've already been on.)

QUICK TIP

Get a scented wall plugin with a smell that you've never used before. Take it on vacation and use it in your hotel room. After your trip, that scent will remind you of your vacation.

I like to save money but not to the point of looking like a cheapskate.

Today, I have 6 tips for you on saving money on your Disney World trip that will still allow you to get the full experience.

I also have a quick tip on what I think is the very best time to visit Disney World and pay the least while being able to do the most.

6 WAYS TO SAVE

The main expense categories for Disney World trips are airfare/gas to get there, park tickets, hotel and food.

Here are some ways to save on all of those categories:

  1. Book your trip during a less expensive season. Here are the seasons defined by Disney World, in order from least expensive to most expensive (season dates can vary by resort):
    • Value Season - most of January (except New Year's Day, Marathon Weekend and MLK Weekend), the first 2 weeks of February, August and the first 2 weeks of September
    • Fall Season - the last 2 weeks of September, most of October (except Columbus Day weekend), the first 3 weeks of November, the first 2 weeks of December
    • Marathon Weekend and MLK Weekend - these 2 seasons are about the same price. Marathon Weekend is often the 2nd weekend in January
    • Regular Season - last week of February, first week of March, all of April (except Easter week) and all of May
    • Summer Season - all of June and July
    • Columbus Day Weekend - this is just the 3 days of that weekend that have slightly higher rates
    • Peak Season - Valentine's Day, the week following President's Day weekend, the last 3 weeks of March and the third week of December
    • Thanksgiving - the whole week of Thanksgiving
    • Presidents Weekend - the 3 days for this holiday weekend have higher rates
    • New Year - applies to New Year's Day
    • Easter - the week before and after Easter weekend
    • Holiday Season - the weekend before Christmas through December 31
  2. Start your trip on a Tuesday or Wednesday since those days tend to have less expensive airfare. You can check bing.com/travel (update: kayak.com/flights is a better option now) for the best time to buy your airfare.
  3. Purchase your park tickets using the private link in the Mousesavers.com newsletter which is sent on the 15th of every month.
  4. Visit during a Free Dining period.
  5. Rent Disney Vacation Club points (I recommend doing it through DVCRequest.com). Details on how this process works can be found at https://wdwprepschool.com/how-to-stay-in-a-deluxe-hotel-for-moderate-prices/
  6. Stay at the Swan or Dolphin which have of the same benefits of on-site resorts but not all. Prices are similar to Disney Moderate Resorts. Guests can use Extra Magic Hours and on-site Disney transportation but can't use Magical Express or charge things on a room key. You can also use Starwood points to pay for stay at the Swan or Dolphin (info on using points to pay for a WDW tip can be found at https://wdwprepschool.com/how-to-get-a-7-day-6-night-disney-world-trip-for-free-using-points-and-miles/)

QUICK TIP

My quick tip: I think the way to get the best experience for the least amount of money is to stay at a Moderate Resort during Free Dining in September or October. That allows you to pay the least expensive nightly rates, get free food (including the Basic Dining Plan which is better than what's offered at Value Resorts) and visit during a less busy time.

The title of this post is a recap of the subject lines of most of the emails I receive.

I have some info on who should use Free Dining and tips on making the best use of it.

I also have a couple of other tips for people wanting to use Child Swap and a room request tip for people staying at Art of Animation.

CAN YOU USE CHILD SWAP IF YOUR CHILD IS TALL?

If your child is too short or too scared to ride a ride, most rides that have a height requirement will offer a Child Swap/Rider Switch option.

To read more about how that works, check out my article on child swap.

ALL ABOUT FREE DINING

What it is
Free Dining is a promotion typically offered in the fall. It allows people to book a hotel and tickets and get the Disney Dining Plan for free.

Since 2009, Free Dining has been offered every fall (the dates have varied). Disney has also offered it twice at the beginning of the year (January - March) and once at the end of May for 1 week.

People who book a Value Resort will get the Quick Service Dining Plan for free during Free Dining (2 Quick Service credits per night of the trip). People at Moderate and Deluxe Resorts will get the Basic Dining Plan for free (1 Table Service and 1 Quick Service credit per night of the trip).

Who should use it
Most people will benefit from using the Free Dining promotion but people staying in Deluxe Resorts will save more money by using a room-only discount (a 30% off discount is often available).

Tips
Some things you should know if you want to use Free Dining:

  • People who arrive by the last day of the promotion can usually use it for their whole trip
  • You have to book all of your Advanced Dining Reservations way in advance if you're going during a Free Dining period
  • Book your package before Free Dining is announced. After it's announced, you'll need to call ASAP to have the promotion applied to your reservation. There are only a certain number of rooms available for the promotion. Just because you have an existing reservation doesn't mean you'll be able to use Free Dining. Call ASAP to get it.
  • The best deal during Free Dining is usually for people who book a Moderate Resort and get the Basic Dining Plan
  • If Free Dining begins in the middle of your trip, you won't be able to use it unless you book 2 separate reservations (1 before Free Dining and 1 during)

QUICK TIP

People staying at Art of Animation can request a room that's located on an upper level with a lake view. This allows people to have a great view and it means less noise since you'll be facing away from the swimming pools and away from the lower floors where it tends to be louder.

PhotoPass can be kind of hard to understand. I've got some info on who should use it and what I think you should purchase from the PhotoPass service.

I've also got tips on planning Table Service meals and a way to make your child easier to find inside one of the attractions at Hollywood Studios.

CAN YOU GET AWAY WITH 2 TABLE SERVICE MEALS ON A WEEK-LONG DISNEY WORLD TRIP?

My friend Casey posed this question to me and I posted it on the Facebook Page. There were lots of replies and the consensus seemed to be that it's definitely possible (especially if budget is a primary concern), but not eating in the restaurants means missing out on a big part of Disney World. It also means missing out on a chance to sit down and take a break from the huge amount of walking involved with Disney World trips.

To submit your question, email podcast at wdwprepschool.com.

PHOTOPASS PROS/CONS AND SOME TIPS

PhotoPass is Disney's service where you approach photographers within the parks, they'll take your picture, scan a PhotoPass card and hand it to you. You can then go online or to a PhotoPass kiosk in the parks and type in that number to order things with your pictures.

Some good reasons to use PhotoPass:

  • All family members can appear in the pictures (instead of the photographer in the family always be missing)
  • PhotoPass photographers use high quality DSLR cameras which may be better than yours
  • The ability to have "magic shots" added to your pictures
  • Ride photos can be included if you purchase PhotoPass+

Some reasons you might not want to use PhotoPass:

  • It can be hard to locate PhotoPass photographers
  • The expense of ordering through Disney (although buying the PhotoCD tends to be the best value)
  • If you have a good camera, you might just want to use that. You can hand it to the PhotoPass photographers and they'll take pictures with your camera.

Some tips for people who want to use PhotoPass:

  • Buy the PhotoCD and print your pictures somewhere less expensive. You can save $50 by purchasing these online before your trip using the links below.
  • Be sure to order your PhotoPass products within 30 days after your trip
  • Take pictures of your PhotoPass cards so you have the number in case you lose your card
  • Share a PhotoPass CD with other families - enter all of your PhotoPass card numbers online and order a CD with all of the pictures (you can order multiple copies for a small additional fee)

For more info, please check out my article that has even more info on PhotoPass at https://wdwprepschool.com/how-photopass-works/.

QUICK TIP

If you plan to have your child(ren) play on the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground at Hollywood Studios, snap a quick pic before they go in so they'll be easier to find when it's time to go. Cast Members monitor the entrance and exit but kids can be hard to find. Having a pic to show the Cast Members will make it a quicker process.

You don't have a whole week to spend at Disney World, so how do you fit it all into just a few days?

I've got some ideas on how to do that plus tips on using the dining plan and picking a room at The Polynesian.

WHAT MEALS SHOULD YOU PAY FOR OUT OF POCKET?

A reader named Mary emailed me with a question about how to decide which meals to pay for out-of-pocket if you're using the Disney Dining Plan but have more dining reservations than credits.

My 2 tips for choosing what to pay for out-of-pocket:

  • Pay for Signature Dining meals because they require 2 Table Service credits but aren't worth 2
  • Pick the cheapest meals on your list to pay for yourself

Be sure to check out my post on maximizing Disney Dining Plan credits for more info on which meals are the best value when using the Disney Dining Plan.

TIPS FOR FITTING DISNEY WORLD INTO 3 DAYS

The guys from Parkeology.com proved that all 47 rides can be done in 1 day (read about their WDW47 adventure), so we should be able to do it in 3 days.

Here's how:

  • Visit during a less busy time (use crowd charts to help pick those dates)
  • Define your must-see items and accept that you won't do everything
  • Do Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom in the same day
  • Use single rider which is available on Expedition Everest, Test Track and Rock n Roller Coaster (but I don't recommend using it on Rock n Roller Coaster)
  • Get up early and stay late (but only on short trips - need to pace yourself on longer trips)

QUICK TIP

People who want to stay at The Polynesian Resort should consider requesting the Tokelau longhouse for their room. The advantages of Tokelau include: having the largest rooms, every floor has a balcony or patio, and it's within walking distance of both monorail lines to Magic Kingdom and EPCOT.

You can find lots of good info on The Polynesian at TikimanPages.com.

Ever wondered how the heck you were going to tour Hollywood Studios and fit in all of the shows?

Today, I've got some ideas on how you can do that and a tip for when to show up to all 4 Disney World theme parks.

TOURING HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS

General Hollywood Studios touring advice: show up at 8:15 because it normally opens at 8:30 a.m. (update: 8:50-9:00 is now the normal opening time), ride Toy Story Mania, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, Star Tours and then figure out the rest of the day.

Advice on planning the rest of the day to include shows:

  • Narrow down the show list. The same people who want to see the toddler shows might not be the same people to see the stunt shows (but they might be!).
  • Check WDWent.com for show times to try to plan before your trip.
  • Eat a meal while attending an outdoor show to save some time. The outdoor shows include Beauty and the Beast, Lights Motors Action, Indiana Jones and Fantasmic.

Sample touring plan to include all shows (check times before your trip):

  • Ride Toy Story Mania
  • See Voyage of the Little Mermaid at 9:15 a.m.
  • Disney Jr. Live on Stage at 9:40 a.m.
  • Kill some time doing non-show things and attend 11:45 a.m. showing of Beauty and the Beast, stopping to get Quick Service food across the street beforehand
  • Walk briskly to Indiana Jones show at 12:30 p.m. (spread the shows out more if this schedule is too tight)
  • Lights, Motors, Action at 1:20 p.m.
  • In the evening, attend the 7:00 American Idol show (the last show of the day which has the winners of the previous shows)
  • See Fantasmic at the end of the night (if there are 2 shows scheduled, the last one will be less busy)

QUICK TIP

You should arrive to all 4 parks before they open. All of the parks open earlier than the posted open time except Magic Kingdom, but you still want to arrive there early to get in the front of the line. (Updated 11/18/2014: Magic Kingdom now usually opens about 10 minutes early as well.)

It's best to arrive to all parks by 8:30 or so when they have a 9:00 opening time.
