Quick tip of the day

Emailed from Kristen B.:
"I know you suggest bringing a towel in your park bag to dry off seats after rain or claim your spot at a parade.

As an alternative to a bath or hand towel that might be bulky, Turkish towels are a great idea.

They’re super absorbent, but take up a lot less room even thought they are large.

Bonus, they dry pretty fast, too!

They can be on the expensive side, but I have found them on sale on Etsy or Amazon for as little as $10."

When people put together trip plans, they often don't consider some details that can really affect their trip plans.

Today, I have 6 tips for making your trip plans even better.

I also have a quick tip for you about maximizing your FastPass+ reservations.

6 TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR TRIP PLANS BETTER

  1. Don't let breakfast reservations interfere with morning touring time. Make Advanced Dining Reservations at 8 a.m. or earlier to finish eating before the parks open.
  2. Generally avoid Extra Magic Hours. Parks that have Extra Magic Hours are usually the busiest of the day. If you want to visit during Extra Magic Hours, be sure to take full advantage and consider changing parks if/when it gets too busy.
  3. Pick restaurants based on where you'll be that day to avoid excess time in transit.
  4. If you plan to do things late at night, don't follow that with an early morning the next day (especially if you have young children).
  5. Don't be afraid to remove things from your plans to make the pace more leisurely and less frantic.
  6. Eat lunch and dinner at off-peak times. Peak times are generally 12-1 p.m. for lunch and 6-7 p.m. for dinner.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

If you arrive to an attraction to use your FastPass+ reservation and the standby line his short, get into the standby line and open your phone to try to change your FastPass+ reservation to something else.

Quick tip of the day

Emailed from Libby S.:
"Since we had a short trip (only 3 nights) seeing all the nighttime shows wasn’t an option.

However, we were able to see Jingle Bell Jingle Bam and Illuminations in the same night.

The shows were scheduled an hour apart (8:30 for JBJB and 9:30 for illuminations).

We walked from Hollywood Studios to Epcot and were able to see both shows.

I would never be able to do this with my kids but since it was just 2 adults we were able to get through the crowd and see both shows!

I thought this maybe helpful to those with short trips who want to see the nighttime shows."

News for the week of 11/30/2018

All of the news for the week of November 30, 2018.

Disney After Hours at Magic Kingdom has been my favorite extra event for awhile now, so the options to be able to do a similar thing at Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios starting next week seem super exciting to me.

(In fact, people with short trips who want to do as much as possible might even consider skipping regular park tickets and instead choose to attend After Hours to pack in as much as possible.)

Here's our overviews of the After Hours event for each of the parks that offer it:

  • Reservations are now open for Gran Destino, the new tower at Coronado Springs that will open up in July 9, 2019. Rooms start at $261/night.
  • We learned this week about the 2 new restaurants that will be at Gran Destino. Three Bridges Bar and Grill will be located on an island on the Lago Dorado lake at Gran Destino. And then a rooftop Table Service restaurant called Toledo will offer great views of Disney World. Reservations for dining aren't available yet, but we'll keep you posted when they are.
  • Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy opens in spring at Hollywood Studios. You can preview it now in the DisneyNOW app (go to the 19 minute mark to see the preview), or watch the Disney Channel on December 1 at 8 p.m. eastern to see it there.
  • Due to work on the upcoming Tron coaster, the Magic Kingdom railroad is expected to be closed December 3, 2018 - January 5, 2019.
  • And due to Disney Skyliner work, the Friendship boats are not taking guests to the International Gateway at Epcot through early December. Guests can still take the boats to Epcot-area resorts and Hollywood Studios, and they can choose to walk to the International Gateway.

Quick tip of the day

Emailed from Amanda C.:
"Did you know that the Table Service restaurants in the park do carry out?

Nearing the end of a long day in Animal Kingdom towards the end of our trip we found ourselves without an ADR for dinner.

We were tiring of the standard Quick Service fare and not feeling like running across the park for something more unique.

As we were near Yak and Yeti, we popped in hoping to snag a table without a reservation but were told it would have been a 30 minute wait.

Instead, we ordered 2 adult entrees to-go for our family of 4, and after a short 10-minute wait for them to prepare our food, we walked out of the restaurant with our meal.

The open seating of the Yak and Yeti Local market (Quick Service) was right next door and nearly empty, so we were easily able to snag a table and enjoy our meal.

So my tip is to consider ordering carry out at times when you didn’t plan for an ADR.

The cost of the two adult meals was similar to what we would have paid for 2 adult and 2 kid quick service meals and was plenty of food for us all. "

Quick tip of the day

Emailed from Lindsey A.:
"I have a quick tip for people looking to add extra magic to a dining reservation in Disney Springs.

We are celebrating my dad's birthday on our upcoming trip, and we wanted to get a special cake.

The cast member I spoke to regarding dining reservations wasn't sure if Amorette's Patisserie delivers, and the Disney website says that you can pre-order and pick up a cake from Amorette's to enjoy at your resort, but it doesn't mention any delivery options.

I called Amorette's directly and got the answer!

They will deliver the large dome character cakes or their signature red velvet cake to Disney Springs restaurants.

Order 72 hours ahead of time to ensure delivery and pre-payment is required.

While we could have picked up the cake ourselves and brought it to dinner, it'll be nice to keep the cake a surprise for my dad and have it waiting for us at The Boathouse!"

There's so much to talk about this week. Let's break it down by category.

General
  • We now have an approximate date for the Disney Skyliner gondolas to open: fall of 2019. Get more info on the gondolas.
  • Automated PhotoPass is coming to 9 character locations at Disney World in early 2019. Disney says "With this change, multiple cameras will capture numerous memorable moments during a character interaction, allowing Guests to choose from a wider variety of photos. PhotoPass Cast Members will remain at over 100 PhotoPass locations." It's not clear how this will work, but has sparked a lot of concern. Feedback can be sent to wdw.guest.communications@disneyworld.com
Hollywood Studios
  • Disney will use a new series of A-1000 robotics to bring state-of-the art animatronics to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Check out the video.
Epcot
  • It was revealed that the new Guardians of the Galaxy coaster is the largest concrete pour Disney has ever done, and the building that will house the ride is large enough to hold 4 Spaceship Earths.
  • An artist's concept of the ride vehicles for the new Guardians of the Galaxy coaster was released. Described as "the world's first storytelling coaster," these ride vehicles will have a 360-degree spinning motion and be programmed to direct your attention at the story happening around you.

Resorts

  • We learned this week that the new tower coming to Coronado Springs Resort will be called the Gran Destino Tower. It will open in July 2019 and feature 545 new guest rooms (50 of those will be suites), a two-story lobby, and a Table Service restaurant with great views. Disney says guests will soon be able to make reservations, but no date has been announced.
  • According to permits published on CaliforniaCoasterKings.com, the upcoming Star Wars hotel appears it may have only have 68 rooms that will come in 2 different sizes. It also looks like guests will be transported using some type of shuttle system. No opening date has been announced.

Quick tip of the day

Emailed from Gretchen L.:
"My family gets Memory Maker every trip and we love to take advantage of all the PhotoPass opportunities.  It’s not uncommon for us to come home with hundreds of photos to download.

On our first trip, I waited until the end of our trip to download all the photos. I quickly learned that it takes a bit of time to download each and every photo, and it was a tedious task.

On our trips since, I take a few minutes a day, either during a break time or once my kids are asleep, to download the PhotoPass photos to my phone.

If you’re like me and get a lot of photos taken, It’s so much more manageable to download them in smaller chucks, than wait until the end."

"I was fortunate enough to tag along on a trip to Walt Disney World with my 4 nieces and nephews this past May.

I noticed we started wasting a lot of time at the turnstiles because my nieces and nephews couldn’t remember which hand they used to tap their finger to gain entrance to the park.

I started using a saying with them: Magic band, magic hand! That is to say, whatever wrist their magic band was on, that was the hand they should use their pointer finger to scan at the turnstiles.

We were lucky because they all had their bands on their right hands and used their right pointer finger, but I imagine using this phrase from the first day of our trip would have kept things flowing easier."

Emailed from Julie H.:
"Our family of 6 relies on getting ice waters from quick service counters on our trips. It's just too much to bring in that many water bottles every day. We found that not only is mobile ordering good for food, but when we just need some quick cups of ice water, we went to the mobile order line.

We didn't order them ahead of time, but often they had waters just sitting there waiting to be passed out or they would kindly get us a cup. It saved a lot of time to not wait in the regular line for just a cup of water."

"I recently had someone tell me that while they were at their Disney resort, they noticed that the tire on their stroller had leaked air and was almost flat. They went to bell services and were told that most resorts have air pumps and can blow the tires back up for them, but that their’s currently wasn’t functioning.

However, they said that the parks also have them! They were able to go to the stroller rental at the entrance to the park, and they blew the tire up for them.

Super helpful if you have a personal or rented stroller at the park that just needs a little air."

Kelly just got back from a Disney World trip that included staying in a Cars suite at Art of Animation, attending the Halloween party, free dining, a legally blind family member, and pregnancy.

I also have a quick tip for you that might help you board Flight of Passage faster.

Quick tip of the day

Emailed from Jennifer A.
"I have a Flight of Passage Quick Tip for guests without FastPasses.

My husband was not able to join me at Animal Kingdom, so I decided to go by myself anyway. I did not have a FastPass for Flight of Passage, but it was a (relatively!) short 65 minute wait so I decided to go for it.

After about 20 minutes of waiting, I reached the part of the line where the cast member asks you how many people are in your party. I said 'one' and much to my delight she guided me to the right-hand side of the queue which appeared to have a special single rider line next to the FastPass lines.

All the other non-FastPass guests were guided to the left and they still had a significant wait ahead of them. There was one other guy ahead of me which meant I only had to wait about 5 more minutes, which cut the total wait time to about 25 minutes.

So my quick tip is to say you're a single rider if you don't mind getting potentially separated from your touring buddy. The guy in front of me was in my same group, so it's possible you may not even be separated!"

Quick tip of the day

Emailed from Sarah K.:
"I was listening to the podcast today about the little one who was scared of the fireworks. I have a tip in case it helps out others. My daughter used to also be scared of fireworks shows, so when we went to see Happily Ever After, I put a pillow in the stroller. We were lucky enough to do the Dessert Party/Garden View, so when the show started she laid on the pillow on my lap and I wrapped it around her ears. That way she was comfy, secure, and the loud bangs were muffled. She had no problems, even with the villain scene toward the end.

Second tip was that for the same show we brought the kids' pajamas with us that day and changed them into their PJs in the bathroom of the dessert party so when they fell asleep in their strollers on the walk out, we could just transfer them right to their beds when we got back to the room!"

Quick tip of the day

Emailed from Ashleigh:
"I am a long-time podcast listener and was so excited to hear that you will be staying at the Dolphin during the same time that my husband and I will be at the Swan celebrating our anniversary in September! It made me think that I should share a tip on how we booked our room at the Swan for this trip. I was able to get a room there for $160/night using a Priceline Express Deal offer. This saved us $50 a night.

For anyone unfamiliar with that, Priceline offers significantly discounted rates on hotels without showing you the name of the hotel you are booking. Hotwire does this, as well. It is a risk, but I did some research and figured out that Disney hotels will be those described as being in the “Walt Disney World - Bonnet Creek” area. The Swan is the only one that is 4.5 stars so I knew that was what I would be getting. I also figured out that Disney hotels appear in these deals and you’ll know because a free airport shuttle is listed as an amenity. No other hotels in the “Walt Disney World - Bonnet creek area” offer free airport shuttles.

We really wanted to stay at the Yacht or Beach, but our trip was a last-minute idea for our anniversary and we needed to stay within a certain budget. This Priceline deal helped us do that while still getting something in the Boardwalk area near the Food & Wine Festival."

Quick tip of the day

Emailed from Brittany:
"1.) When making FastPasses during the summer, make sure to put your outdoor attractions early or super late in the day due to thunderstorms. We had our slinky dog cancelled twice because it was midday. We got to ride it but had to stay way longer until it reopened.

2.) If you only hold one FastPass (first two were used or you’ve begun booking extra after your first three) and it becomes multiple experience due to closure, the system will allow you to book another. "

"I have a car rental tip for people on a budget to Disney. We're staying off property and needed to rent a minivan for the week, but couldn't find anything under $900. Our family saved $600 on a week's minivan rental by picking the vehicle up at a neighborhood rental location.

We plan to Uber from MCO to the location, in downtown Orlando. We are dropping the minivan off at MCO before our flight home, for a whopping $4.65 one-way destination fee. This family of five will gladly go through the hassle of slugging three car seats and countless suitcases onto an Uber for a savings of that amount."

"While in Mickey's PhilarMagic on my last trip, I heard the lady behind me tell whoever she was traveling with that she wished I'd take my Minnie ears off. I immediately turned around and apologized and took them off, because I didn't want them to be in her way, but I had totally forgot that I even had them on! The lady was embarrassed that I heard her complaining and apologized, but I was happy that I heard her because I didn't want my ears to get in her way. The rest of the trip, I realized how the wearing of Minnie ears could definitely get in the way of those behind you and I tried to remember to take them off whenever we were in theater-type seating. Be thoughtful and remove your mouse ears."

Quick tip of the day

Listener Diego emailed this tip:
"Disney parks are huge, and for a person that goes 2 times a year, you know it like the palm of your hand, but if it is your first time, it's like a maze.

And sometimes a map doesn't give enough information or a 'ground level view' that will help you not feeling lost in the parks and wandering without much direction.

Same applies to how to get from the parking to the entrance, how to move inside the hotel, etc.

So, the quick tip is: virtually navigate the parks at ground level using Google Street View or jump between nearby 360 photos in google maps or the ground level view on google earth, and move around the parks so you know them before going."

Quick tip of the day

Listener Mary emailed this tip:
"One tip people may not know since it doesn't happen very often -- We decided to do rope drop at 7 a.m. at Animal Kingdom on MLK day because we figured it would be a busy day. BUT we had decided not to do Flight of Passage because we didn't have a fast pass and we have little kids.

My plan was to go straight to Safari. I was SO proud of myself as we walked up at 7:05 (I actually said to my family, 'we did it') only to be stopped at the entrance. Even though the app showed the safari ride was open, the cast members told us that they never open attractions that involve the animals before 8am. Apparently that is too early to get them going.

The rest of the park was empty aside from Pandora, and we would have been fine getting there at 8. Cast members said the 7am time is basically just for the Flight of Passage line. Luckily my husband got to go ride Everest a couple times with no line so I wasn't in too much trouble! Just a tip for the rare times that AK opens that early."

Quick tip of the day

Listener Jennifer emailed this tip:
"My friend and I recently traveled to Disney World together (without kids which was SO MUCH FUN).

While standing at the front of the line for the Rock n Roller Coaster, I noticed that there are two rows in each limousine car. The front row of each car appears to have several more inches of leg room than the back row.

This piece of info may make the ride much more comfortable for your taller listeners as it did me (I am roughly 6 ft tall). We had been directed to a back row when we entered the line but a cast member kindly accommodated my request to switch once I noticed the difference. "

Quick tip of the day

Listener Christine emailed this tip:
"I had a quick listener tip inspired by Kim's trip report. My kids are similar age to hers (2-year-old son and almost 6-year-old daughter), so we also wondered if our daughter would be into some of the bigger rides or not. We also knew we would have access to Rider Switch for any ride that offers it, as our son would be too little to ride any of those rides.

What we decided was to have dad book a FastPass+ for the Rider Switch rides (like Seven Dwarfs), and I (with or without my daughter depending on how she is feeling) would then ride it with the Rider Switch pass. My daughter and I booked FastPass+ for character meet and greets paired up with each of the "big rides" dad booked. This way our daughter gets the most out of her FastPass+, and she can make the call at the time if she wants to join me on the child swap or not.

Of note, a drawback is that dad may not be with us for the character meeting that only we have FastPass+ for (I'm not sure if cast members would let him come through the FP+ line with us or not), so for any character meetings he really wanted to be there for (like talking Mickey), he booked a FastPass+ as well to not leave it to chance. For us I think this will allow everyone in our family get the most out of our FastPass+ allocations."
