Quick tip of the day

Listener Melissa emailed this tip:
"We are traveling to Disney in March and staying at Bay Lake Tower. We are going with another family, but are arriving on two separate days (we check in Saturday, they check in Sunday). This trip each family decided to splurge and get the Deluxe Dining Plan. We made reservations for 14 character meals, plus Be Our Guest breakfast, Tony’s and T Rex. Our friends are arriving a day after us but we are meeting them for dinner at 1900 Park Fare the first day we check in. Since they won’t have their meal plan activated until the following day when they check in, we are going to use the credits from our plan to pay for their meal. Then once their plan is activated they can pay for one of our meals later in the trip. This saves them paying out of pocket and maximizes the credit use."

Quick tip of the day

Listener Hope emailed this tip:
"I’ve been preparing for our trip in a few days and checking things off my list. I realized I needed to hold our mail since we have an eight day trip this time. I was a little panicked thinking I had run out of time to get to the post office. Luckily I thought to go to the USPS website. The online mail hold process is very easy. You just select your dates and if you want to pick up or have your held mail delivered. Afterward USPS sends a confirmation email to the email you entered in the form on the website. Very easy and convenient. Much more than going to the post office."

Quick tip of the day

Listener Laurent emailed these tips:
"1. Flight of Passage was incredible! However, when my husband took my older two children, my daughter’s 3D glasses fell off as the simulation was beginning. It ruined the ride for her. Luckily, we had a rider switch pass and I took my older children back through. As I was trying to tuck my daughter’s glasses into her pigtail holders a cast member told her to just hold the glasses the whole time. I wish we had known this the first time through!

2. Park entry. On our seventh park day we finally made it through the band/finger scan without someone in our group requiring additional help. Next time, I will coach the children on which finger to choose, and I will paint each child’s 'scan' fingernail a special color."

"There’s nothing worse than everyone getting all excited to ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Train with a FastPass+ and then seeing disappointed faces because the ride is closed because of continued heavy rain and thunderstorms. As bad weather is more likely to occur from afternoon onwards in Florida, my tip is that if you have no time constraints around planning your FastPasses, then try to schedule any rides with outdoor elements for the early part of the day to avoid the likelihood of disruption to your touring plans. Happy faces all round!"

Quick tip of the day

Listener Hannah emailed this tip:
"During our time in Magic Kingdom we decided to stop and get a Dole Whip on our way through Adventureland. Apparently everyone else had the same idea...I’ve never seen a line at Aloha Isle with more than a couple people and there were about 20.

So we stood in line for a couple minutes and it wasn’t moving at all. So instead we got out of the line, opened the My Experience app and ordered our Dole Whip using Mobile Ordering. Approximately 30 seconds after placing the order I was able to walk right up to the window for pickup. Saved us time, and saved us standing in a line!

We did this a couple of times when we stopped spontaneously for something at a Quick Service location. I know this doesn’t work right now if you’re on a meal plan, but if you aren’t - save yourself from an unnecessary line!"

Listener Julie emailed this tip:
"When trying to book extra fastpasses later in the day, it's often hard to get the same time for a while group. But you can search for less people and often find overlapping reservations. Sometimes even for the same time.

For instance: we were on our way to Animal Kingdom in the afternoon and wanted to do the Kilimanjaro Safaris, there were no FastPasses for four people. But there are plenty for one person all within 10-15 minutes of each other, since there is an hour to get to the fast pass after it starts we all had plenty of time to get there and ride as one group."

Quick tip of the day

Listener Brandyn emailed this tip:

“I was wanting everyone on our trip to have a copy of our daily plans so that I don’t feel like I’m having to direct everyone, but I wanted them off phones for ease.

I printed our daily plans on pocket-sized pieces of paper and then laminated them so they’ll be sweat and water resistant!

You can buy laminators for under $20, and I use it for a lot of other stuff. Or you could have them laminated at an office supply store.”

Quick tip of the day

Listener Whitney emailed this tip:
"I have two small sons who love Disney popcorn! However, during our first trip, we learned that purchasing them each a bag of popcorn inevitably led to at least one of them spilling the popcorn, which made a huge mess and, of course, led to a child in tears because they had spilled their bag of popcorn. So, I quickly learned that it was much better to purchase only one bag of popcorn and split it between the two boys using Ziploc bags before giving it to them to eat.

When ordering popcorn, I always ask for an extra cup (which is no charge!) and the cast member will almost always fill that cup with popcorn too. Between the cup of popcorn and the purchased bag of popcorn, there is enough to almost completely fill 2 quart sized bags, which is great for so many reasons. Obviously, the children are much less likely to spill the popcorn and it is easy to just close the bag and save it for later, which is so much easier than dealing with the open paper bags from the popcorn kiosks. But, this also really helps stretch our snack credits since we are able to give each child plenty of popcorn but only use one snack credit."

Disney Dining Plan tips

What is the Disney Dining Plan?

  • Prepaid credits for food
  • Disney Dining Plan is part of a package that includes tickets
  • Can also be part of a DVC reservation that doesn’t require tickets
  • Three basic types of dining plans - Quick Service, Regular, and Deluxe
  • Credits are based on how many nights you are staying
  • Everybody on the reservation must have the same plan for the whole trip
  • Can use credits whenever you want until midnight of your checkout day

How much does it cost and how many credits are included?

All of these plans include 1 refillable mug per person which can be refilled at any resort, but not in the parks.

Edit
Name QS credits TS credits Snack credits 2018 price for ages 10+ 2018 price for ages 3-9
Quick-Service Dining Plan 2 0 2 $52.50 $21.75
Regular Dining Plan 1 1 2 $75.49 $25.75
Deluxe Dining Plan 3 credits to be used for either QS or TS 2 $116.25 $39.99

What does a credit include?

  • Quick Service - entree (or combo meal, where available) and a beverage
  • Table Service - entree and beverage. Lunch and dinner also include dessert.
  • Snack - noted on menus with a little DDP icon
  • 2017 beverages: soft drinks, tea, coffee, lemonade
  • 2018 beverages: all of the above + beer, wine, shakes

Disney Dining Plan tips for maximizing credits

My Disney Experience app/website Disney Dining Plan tips

  • When searching for DDP restaurants, don't filter for the next year. Instead, filter for restaurants for the current year since many restaurants are slow to be added.
  • The My Disney Experience app will now allow you to track credits during your trip.

DDP credit tips

  • Quick Service credits are not split between adult and child
  • Can use DDP credits anytime during your trip (until midnight on your checkout day) and for anybody
  • Epcot festival booths have great snack credits

Refillable mug tips

  • Mix and match lids to create unique color combos for groups of 5+
  • Pour refillable drinks into disposable cups when heading to a park
  • At your resort, get a bottled drink with a QS credit and use refillable mug for your drink

Who should get a Disney Dining Plan?

  • People who want an all-inclusive feel
  • People planning to eat at the most expensive restaurants
  • People who get it for free (but verify it’s your best deal)

Quick tip of the day

Listener Emily emailed in this tip:
"We just returned from a Disney World trip. I, unfortunately, came down with a super bad stomach bug halfway through. After 2.5 really unpleasant days, we finally called our trip insurance for help. They connected us with DOCS - Doctors On Call Service. The doctor came to our resort room, brought his entire exam room with him in a rolling office suitcase, and dispended medication I needed to feel better all right there on the spot.

He also had a pharmacy on standby that delivered additional medication to the front desk of our hotel and charged it to our room. If we'd known about this service sooner, we wouldn't have missed some park touring days. I'm still really glad we called. You pay cash for the service, but they give you all the paperwork you need to file with your insurance afterward. And we had trips insurance that will be primary on the medical, so it will be 100% covered.

We also spoke to the front desk concierge staff at our All-Star Sports Resort about missing some park days, and they gave us additional park tickets in our My Disney Experience account to come back and use anytime in the next 5 years."

Quick tip of the day

"On a recent trip to Orlando, we discovered you can save a lot of time by being enrolled in the rental car company loyalty programs. When we arrived at the Budget area, there was an extremely long line, and very few agents working at the counter. But we happened to notice a sign directing FastBreak members directly to the garage. Quick tip of the day

Listener Lori emailed this tip:
"I was trying to book an early morning reservation for three at Garden Grill, and wasn't happy with the times available. I increased the number of guests from three to five and did the search again and found that more (earlier) times opened up. I booked the breakfast for five, then went back in the reservation later and edited back to three guests. So my tip is, if you aren't finding the restaurant availability you want, try increasing the number of guests and more reservations may appear."

3 things I'm into right now

1.) Dessert parties
Disney has made changes to the parties and/or the nighttime shows that make these much more worth it than they used to be. Use this graphic to help you compare.

2.) Dining packages for people on the Disney Dining Plan

  • Available at Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and seasonally at Epcot
  • Same number of credits as non-dining package reservations
  • Dining at non-buffets gives you an appetizer in addition to the entree and dessert

3.) Express transportation for people with Park Hopper tickets
At $19/day or $29/week, it's an inexpensive way to feel like a VIP. Read an overview of how it works.

People often cite FastPass+ reservations as the most stressful part of planning, so today I want to discuss what you need to know that will hopefully help you feel less stressed.

I also have a quick tip that will let you visit some attractions before the parks open as a bonus to a dining reservation.

FastPass+ help

General touring advice

  • Show up at least 45 minutes before park opening
  • Follow a touring plan until lunch time, and visit popular attractions either within the first hour or later in the day with FP+
  • After lunch, do “anytime” attractions, use FP+, take breaks

General FP+ info

  • Onsite guests can make all FP+ 60 days before their trip begins beginning at 7am eastern
  • Offsite guests can make FP+ 30 days before each day of their trip beginning at 7am eastern
  • Most FP+ give you a 1 hour window (except for shows which will be shorter)
  • Show up anytime within that time frame (can usually be 5 minutes early and 15 minutes late)
  • Can’t overlap FP+
  • Can make 3 FP+ ahead of time for 1 park. Once those 3 are used, you can get a 4th in any park, then a 5th, etc.

On-site guests booking 60 days ahead

  • Log out, log back in to make sure the site will show you the full trip dates
  • Can use multiple devices at once
  • Make FP+ in order of difficulty, not chronologically
  • Only really need to worry about Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Frozen Ever After, and the 2 new Pandora attractions (Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey)
  • End of your trip will give you better odds
  • After making difficult FP+ reservations, go back and add in other FP+

Everybody else (offsite guests and and onsite guests who are not booking 60 days in advance)

  • Will have a hard time booking Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Frozen Ever After, and the 2 new Pandora attractions (Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey)
  • Either plan on doing those at rope drop OR keep checking constantly for openings

Quick tip of the day

Many pre-park opening breakfast reservations will allow you to visit an attraction before the park opens. Check this list for where and when that often happens.

Quick tip of the day

Karen emailed with this tip:
"We landed around noon, stopped by our hotel for a swim, and got to Epcot at about 3 pm. We had FastPasses booked for Spaceship Earth, Turtle Talk, and Soarin'. We also had a dinner reservation at Garden Grill. It was a perfect start to our trip. I know many of your readers may not want to use a park ticket when they aren't going to have a full day, but we felt it made for a much more relaxed Epcot day later in the week. I also liked Garden Grill as our arrival day character meal as opposed to Chef Mickey's since after a day of traveling, etc. It was nice to sit and relax and not be dealing with a buffet."

Info from this episode

Free dining

  • Doesn't always make financial sense since you have to give up other discounts to get it
  • Make sure you're ok paying the price without free dining and not counting on getting the dining plan for free
  • Dates are much more limited for the promotion now compared to in the past
  • Consider not booking flights before free dining is announced
  • Getting dining reservations during free dining periods can be a challenge

Disney World faves

  • Chad - fall during Halloween and Food and Wine for adults, January/early February for families, Port Orleans Riverside, Whispering Canyon Cafe, Ohana, Splitsville
  • Jen F - January (except for holidays), Polynesian, 1900 Park Fare, Ohana, Trail's End
  • JVH - end of September, Art of Animation suites (especially Cars section), Cinderella's Royal Table
  • Mine - first week of March, Contemporary, Garden Grill, California Grill

Quick tip of the day

Natalie emailed with this tip: "The First Aid stations throughout Disney World are fabulous. We made multiple trips to First Aid for complimentary band-aids, Tylenol, and even sinus medicine. There was never a wait and the staff were very friendly and professional.

In addition, our youngest son has some sensory issues specifically related to noise. We didn't anticipate just how loud some rides, including roller coasters, would be for him. Luckily, the fine folks at Disney First Aid were able to provide us with ear plugs for him to use. It made a world of difference and allowed us to participate in rides as a whole family. They really go above and beyond to anticipate their guests needs!"

Jill loved how fun the queues are. See which attractions offer that.

Gina's trip report

Gina and her family (including her parents, husband, and children) traveled just after Thanksgiving. Their trip plans included staying Club Level at the Boardwalk Inn, a VIP tour guide, Memory Maker, Free Dining, some character meals, dessert parties, Candlelight Processional dining package, Universal, and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.

Gina recommends the Birnbaum's Walt Disney World For Kids book to help prep children before their trip. They also had a good experience using a car service to get from the airport to their resort.

Quick tip of the day

Another reader named Gina suggests that people using a stroller during their trip who are worried about valuables being stolen consider packing 2 bags - 1 with valuables and 1 with other items. When the stroller is parked, just take the bag with your valuables in it.
