5 THINGS I'VE LEARNED ABOUT DISNEY WORLD IN 2014
Animal Kingdom is almost always a great park to visit, even on Extra Magic Hour days
Extra Magic Hours can be super useful if you have Park Hopper tickets
Separate credit cards can be used for room charges on WDW resort rooms
Fall may now be a busy time to visit based on how crowds were in fall 2014
Rides that didn't used to require FastPasses now often do
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
There are many Landry's restaurants nationwide and 4 located at Disney World - 2 Rainforest Cafe locations, T-Rex Cafe and Yak and Yeti. If you sign up for Landry's Select Club, you get extra perks such as a $25 credit during your birthday month, priority seating and 10% off merchandise. It does cost a one-time fee of $25 to join, but you get that amount back in restaurant credit within 24 hours of signing up.

Consider packing 2 outfits per day when traveling during times with hot weather
When traveling during a time when your local stores don't have clothes and items for hot weather, consider shopping online on sites like eBay or stores like T.J. Maxx may have a small selection of off-season items
Even when traveling when it's hot in Orlando, consider packing a light sweater since indoor spaces are often so cold
Over-the-door shoe organizers can help keep your hotel room organized
Packing kids' outfits in Ziplocs can make it easy for them to get dressed during your trip. Rolling clothes within the bags can help keep the clothes from getting wrinkly.
If checking multiple bags for multiple people, I'd suggest spreading items evenly amongst the bags. That way if a bag gets lost, 1 person doesn't end up without all of their stuff.
When traveling domestically, packing food is possible and often more convenient than making a grocery store stop.
Take a screenshot of your My Disney Experience plans so that you're not relying on the app to connect to get the info you need.

Make sure everybody you want to make reservations for is either listed in your MDE account or you're linked to them as friends
Use your computer and not the mobile app
Log out and back in a few minutes before it's time to make your reservations
For Advance Dining Reservations:
For on-site guests, these can be made online at 6 a.m. eastern time, 180 days before their trip begins. For off-site guests, these can be made online at 6 a.m. eastern time, 180 days before the day they want to eat there.
The phone lines open up at 7 a.m. eastern time and you may want to have the number handy in case there are website issues - 407-WDW-DINE
Have your credit card stored in the "Payment Methods" section of your profile page
The reservations that will require payment at the time of booking are: Cinderella’s Royal Table, Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue, Spirit of Aloha, and Mickey's Backyard BBQ
Feel free to practice ahead of time by making dining reservations and then canceling them
Put your dining reservations in order of difficulty, not chronological order
You can use more than 1 computer at a time to make reservations so do that if you have multiple hard-to-get restaurants on your list
For FastPass+ reservations:
On-site guests can make these at 7 a.m. eastern time, 60 days before their trip begins. Off-site guests can make these at 7 a.m. eastern, 30 days before the day they want to use the FastPass+ reservations.
Make sure your park tickets are linked beforehand. If you booked a package, they'll already be linked. If you bought tickets separately, you can link them through the app or website.
Make FastPass+ reservations in order of difficulty (mostly by just putting Anna/Elsa and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at the top and everything else after that)
People with room-only reservations can practice making FastPass+ reservations ahead of time (people with packages can't)
Use this site to monitor FastPass+ availability (Update: this tool is no longer available.)
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
Try this dining search tool for an easier view of what dining reservations are open for your trip. I don't recommend using it if you're making reservations 180 days beforehand, but I do recommend it if you're under the 180 day mark. (Update: this search tool is no longer available.)

Festival of Fantasy parade - afternoon parade at Magic Kingdom that begins at 3:00 daily, has a FastPass+ option (viewing is in The Hub area) but not recommended, definitely worth your time to see, recommend viewing from the train station at the front of Magic Kingdom
Main Street Electrical Parade - nighttime parade, has a FastPass+ available (viewing in The Hub area) but not recommended and often not available until 30 or fewer days beforehand (or not at all), watch from front of the park for easy exit or watch from Frontierland along the parade route
Celebrate the Magic - projection show on the castle held in the evenings, watch from The Hub or near Casey's Corner, does not offer a FastPass+, worth seeing
Wishes - fireworks at Magic Kingdom, has a FastPass+ available (viewing is in grassy area off to the side of The Hub area) but not recommended and often not available until 30 or fewer days beforehand (or not at all), watch from the front of the park for easy exit, Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert Party is an option ($27/adult) which gives you an assigned table to sit and watch fireworks
Epcot
Illuminations - nighttime show on the water in the World Showcase, FastPass+ is available but not recommended (viewing area doesn't provide a good view), Illuminations dessert party is available but I don't recommend it, the Norway side of the World Showcase often offers a less smoky view, see this map for recommended viewing spots
Hollywood Studios
Fantasmic - nighttime show held in a large outdoor theater, can attend by waiting in standby line, FastPass+ available (only recommended if you can get it as a 4th FastPass+ option), Fantasmic Dinner Package is an option, recommend sitting further back, there's an exit at the top right part of the theater that allows you to exit to the front of the park more quickly, more tips in my Fantasmic article
Fireworks - only available on special occasions such as Star Wars Weekends, suggest viewing from the front of the park or even outside the park
Animal Kingdom No nighttime show right now but "Rivers of Light" is speculated to be coming in March 2016 (side note: I said 2015 in the podcast but it's actually 2016).

Preface: many of these are temporary, due to testing and an in-between phase as some rides/entertainment get removed and new stuff gets added. I get that, but feel for the people who are taking a trip right in the middle of it.
Issues at Magic Kingdom
Be Our Guest only allowing people in if they have a FastPass+ (have a backup plan if you had your heart set on eating there)
Premium events being offered during parties that are held at Magic Kingdom
Issues at Epcot
Maelstrom closure
Removing Off Kilter, Fife and Drum Corps, Mo'Rockin, and World Showcase Players. Though Disney is bringing new entertainment to the World Showcase, the first one to be introduced (this lumberjack act) doesn't appear to be up to Disney World's standards.
Issues at Hollywood Studios
Closure of Backlot Tour and American Idol Experience (though new things will eventually be opened, having two options taken away in this relatively small park is noticeable)
FastPass+ only tests at Toy Story Mania - although it was only a temporary test, it could have been handled in a better way. If you've only got 1 day to spend at Hollywood Studios and Disney surprises you with the fact that only FastPass+ holders can ride, that's really disappointing.
Frozen premium holiday event - $89 to see the sing-along and eat desserts while watching the Osborne Lights does not seem like a good value. Instead, get a FastPass+ for the sing-along and enjoy the lights the last 30 minutes that the park is open while eating a cupcake from Starring Rolls Cafe.
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
Bounceback offers are promotions that are usually found in folders in Disney World resort rooms (if you don't find one, dial 8844 from your room phone to ask what's available).

Step 1: pick your dates Decide when you want to go. Use my charts to help figure out the least crowded times.
Step 2: choose a place to stay On-site guests get Extra Magic Hours, the ability to make all dining reservations 180 days before their trip begins, FastPass+ reservations 60 days beforehand, MagicBands and the ability to charge things to their room.
Off-site guests will usually get more space for less money. FastPass+ reservations for off-site guests are made 30 days beforehand and off-site guests use their park tickets to enter the park and check-in for FastPass+ reservations.
Step 3: make a daily plan Choose where you'll be each day of your trip and then decide which park tickets you'll need to execute that plan. Check out my suggestions on planning each day.
Step 4: choose your dining options After you know where you'll be each day, decide where you'll dine that's close to where you'll be to avoid spending too much time on transportation. Check out all my dining guides to help decide where to eat.
Step 5: plan your park touring Figure out your touring plans before it's time to make your FastPass+ reservations. I suggest showing up before the parks open, touring the first couple of hours without any FastPass+, using FastPass+ reservations for late morning and early afternoon, and then leaving the rest of your day more flexible.
Check out my touring plans which are mostly structured that way.
People attending one of the parties, such as Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party or Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, can enter Magic Kingdom as early as 4:00 (even though the party events don't begin until 7) and can book FastPass+ reservations for the 4-7:00 timeframe. There will not be any FastPass+ reservations available during the party (for many nights, they won't be needed) but you can use them from 4-7:00.

When it's held: weekend in mid-May through mid-june
What it includes: celebrity appearances, Star Wars character experiences, special food and merchandise, Symphony in the Stars fireworks, character dining
Cost: No extra cost beyond your Hollywood Studios park ticket except for the premium package
When to go: mid-May party dates will be better than later dates
When it's held: at Magic Kingdom from 7-midnight a few times a week during September and October
What it includes: trick-or-treating, chance for everybody to wear costumes, special parade/fireworks/castle show, character meet-and-greets, shorter waits at rides (for most party dates), magic photo shots
Cost: this is a hard-ticketed event that requires a separate ticket that costs $62-71
When to go: September dates will be less crowded than October dates
Worth it? Yes, for people who can stay up until midnight
When it's held: at Magic Kingdom from 7-midnight a few days a week in November through mid-December (except for Thanksgiving week)
What it includes: special parade and fireworks, character meet-and-greets and dance parties, shorter lines on rides (usually), cookies and hot chocolate from restaurants
Cost: hard-ticketed event that costs $62-71
When to go: November dates are usually better than December
Worth it? While not as popular as the Halloween party, I still think it's worth it for groups who are able to stay up until midnight
When it's held: in 2014, the dates were July 5-September 28
What it includes: sing-along, ice skating, dance party, character procession, fireworks
Cost: no extra cost beyond your Hollywood Studios park ticket except for the premium package
When to go: Not sure if the event will return for 2015
Worth it? For Frozen fans, it's worth it, but the premium package isn't necessary
Villains Unleashed
When it's held: in 2014, it was held on August 23
What it includes: meet-and-greets with rare characters, dance party, special stage shows, merchandise, fireworks
Cost: this was a hard-ticketed event that cost $67
When to go: Not sure if the event will return for 2015
Worth it? Many complaints about the event having long lines and issues
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
Just want to watch the fireworks for the special parties but don't want to pay to enter? Read this DISboards.com post for detailed locations to watch Magic Kingdom fireworks.

Step 1: pick your dates - many older kids don't like missing school so I'd recommend visiting at the end of May, end of August or during Spring Break (if your Spring Break isn't connected to Easter)
Step 2: choose a place to stay - I really like the Boardwalk area for older kids because they have the freedom to visit the Boardwalk activities, walk to two of the parks and use the Stormalong Bay pool if your family is staying at The Beach Club or Yacht Club
Step 3: make a daily plan - if you plan to cut out little kid rides, I'd suggest a day at each of the 4 parks plus a day or two at Universal
Step 4: decide where you'll eat - there are good character meals (1900 Park Fare dinner, Chef Mickey's), unique foods (Biergarten, Marrakesh, Teppan Edo, Boma), ornery/fun places (Whispering Canyon Cafe, 50s Prime Time Cafe, Sci-Fi Dine In, Ohana) and upscale restaurants that aren't pretentious (Artist Point, Jiko)
Step 5: plan park touring - I suggest following my normal touring plans, but you might want to skip most of the Fantasyland section of Magic Kingdom if you're trying to eliminate little kid rides
Disney gift cards can be used to pay for most anything at Disney World, including room charges. You'll want to stop by the front desk to pay it off before your account reaches $500 in charges and/or by the day before you depart so your credit card doesn't get charged.
You can get discounted Disney gift cards at Sam's Club ($150 worth of gift cards for $142.98) or by using your Target Red Card for 5% discount.

View Magic Kingdom fireworks and Electrical Water Pageant from Magic Kingdom-area resorts - Wilderness Lodge doesn't have a great view of the fireworks due to the height of the trees, the music from the fireworks is piped in to some of the resorts
Boardwalk entertainment - see jugglers, magicians, midway games, etc., on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights
Animal activities at Animal Kingdom Lodge - participate in various things such as flamingo feeds, viewing animals with night vision binoculars and animal tracking
Decorate cookies at Boma at Animal Kingdom Lodge, daily at 1 p.m.
Take a guided tour of Wilderness Lodge - held Wednesday-Saturday at 9 a.m.
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
Consider buying party tickets or water park tickets at Disney World and not before you go if you're concerned about the weather. Some party dates will sell out so you'd want to buy ahead of time for popular parties but most will not.

Disney World park tickets are expensive and can be confusing to figure out. Today, I have info on which options are available and who should choose each one.
I also have a quick tip about your techie setup when making hard-to-get dining and FastPass+ reservations.

These are the types of tickets that you can get for your Disney World trip:
Base tickets - allows you entry into 1 park for each day of your trip
Base tickets with the Park Hopper option - flat rate fee on top of the price of base tickets that allows you to enter more than 1 park per day. Read my article on who should make use of Park Hoppers for more info.
Base tickets with Water Parks Fun and More - flat rate fee that allows you to enter 1 park per day plus entries into extra things like the water parks, DisneyQuest, the 2 miniature golf courses and Oak Tree golf course (anybody planning to go to a water park should probably get this option since the cost is basically the same)
Base tickets with both Park Hoppers and Water Parks Fun and More - allows you to park hop and entry into the extra places (buying both gives you a reduced flat fee compared to buying them each separately)
No expiration tickets - most tickets expire within 14 days of first being used but adding the No Expiration option allows you to use them anytime. These make sense for people who know they'll be back to Disney World but won't be spending more than 10 days in 1 year. (No expiration tickets were discontinued in February 2015)
People buying a package will pay full price through Disney since packages require you to book a hotel and park tickets (and you can add a Disney Dining Plan optionally).
You can use multiple devices (computers, tablets, smartphones) when trying to get dining or FastPass+ reservations. This might make it easier to get difficult reservations, especially if you have multiple people logging on at once. You will not be logged out of My Disney Experience by doing it this way.

There's a lot of bad advice floating around but here are 5 things I often hear that aren't good:
Choose the park you'll visit each day based on some arbitrary factor like which bus arrives first or the weather. I would suggest being more strategic about it and using the PDF of best/worst parks per day that are posted on the monthly dashboards.
Save money on park tickets by purchasing from a ticket broker. Deep discounts on park tickets are hard to find so be leery of these operations which are selling used tickets which may not work and could get you in trouble.
Park at Downtown Disney to avoid parking fees. There are not direct buses between Downtown Disney and the parks so park in the parking lot where you'll be spending the day instead of spending 90 minutes getting to and from to save a few dollars.
Wing it in the parks. Not a good idea to go into the parks without a plan. I suggest being structured from park opening through lunch and then being spontaneous the rest of the day. My touring plans are set up with that in mind.
Yell "Andy is coming" to make the Toy Story characters drop. No, this is too dangerous for the characters and won't actually work.
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
Many people ask me if they should avoid choosing FastPass+ for rides that have good queues. I don't generally suggest that as a good strategy but you might consider doing that for Haunted Mansion (which has a separate line you can enter to explore the interactive elements) or Dumbo (which has an indoor play area for kids to enjoy while they wait).

Do I have to stay on-site to eat at Disney World restaurants? No, anybody can eat in any of the restaurants. If you choose a restaurant inside 1 of the theme parks, a park ticket will be required.
Are Advanced Dining Reservations canceled if I cancel my hotel reservation? No, they aren't.
Are dining reservations required for babies and toddlers? Yes, they should be included but you don't have to order them their own entree at the meal.
If I'm on the regular Disney Dining Plan, how do I pay for all 3 meals with credits? You can share entrees at Quick Service restaurants to stretch your credits and/or pay for some things out-of-pocket.
Can I order just dessert? Yes, you can order whatever you want.
BEST TABLE SERVICE RESTAURANTS WHEN PAYING OUT-OF-POCKET
If you're not on the Disney Dining Plan, you can eat at the best restaurants for the least amount of money by choosing breakfast or lunch instead of dinner and you can also share entrees at non-buffet and non-family style restaurants.
These restaurants offer the best value when paying out-of-pocket:
Trail's End ($18 average meal price)
Beaches and Cream ($20 average meal price)
Grand Floridian Cafe ($15-26 average meal price)
Rose and Crown ($28 average meal price)
50s Prime Time Cafe ($29 average meal price but splitting entrees and desserts is easy here with such big portions)
BEST TABLE SERVICE RESTAURANTS ON THE DISNEY DINING PLAN
Focusing your meals on dinners and character meals will generally give you the best value for your Disney Dining Plan Table Service credits.
Here are the best Table Service restaurant values on the Disney Dining Plan:
Akershus
Chef Mickey's dinner
Crystal Palace dinner
Ohana dinner
Boma dinner
Garden Grill dinner
1900 Park Fare dinner
Cape May Cafe dinner
Whispering Canyon Cafe dinner
Tutto Italia dinner
Chefs de France dinner
Biergarten dinner
Via Napoli dinner
Teppan Edo dinner
Marrakesh dinner

Budgets can vary a lot but I suggest $100 as a minimum for a week-long trip. Playing Tinker Bell or purchasing an in-room celebration can help reduce kids asking for lots of souvenirs during trips.
Buy things when you see them because you might not see them again
On-site guests can send items back to their resort to avoid carrying. Off-site guests can send items to the front of the park.
Focus on exclusive items that can only be found at Disney World such as Star Wars merchandise (in the exit area of Star Tours in Hollywood Studios or Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney), Mr. Potato Head parts, CDs or Vera Bradley bags
Cheap/free suggestions include pressed coins and the character drawings at Animation Academy at Hollywood Studios (Update: Animation Academy is no longer open at Hollywood Studios as of July 12, 2015)
Souvenirs to help you remember the trip include personalized ornaments (available at the Christmas stores in Magic Kingdom or Downtown Disney), silhouettes (available in the France section of Epcot, a couple of locations in Magic Kingdom and in Downtown Disney), merchandise that has the year on it (such as a picture frame)
Other favorite items include Epcot passports, Mickey ears, and pick-a-pearl in the Japan section of Epcot

Your personal bags will go under the seat in front of you, carry ons go in overhead compartments usually
Trays stay up on take off and landing, electronics can now be used during the whole flight in airplane mode
Take off and landing are when ears will hurt so have little ones suck on a bottle, chew gum, etc.
Many flights now have wifi but often don't allow streaming of things like Netflix or Hulu because it takes too much bandwidth
Temps often get cold in flight so having a jacket or sweater for everyone to wear will come in handy
Keep your seat belt on at all times and only remove it when the seat belt sign is turned off and you need to get up
Drinks and snacks are usually served in flight at no extra cost and international flights often include alcohol
Surprises are hard to keep on Orlando flights
AFTER LANDING
Plane will pull up to a gate and everybody will get their carry on bags and exit toward the baggage claim area
Flying into Orlando: will fly into a satellite, take the tram to the main terminal. if you're using Magical Express and allowing them to get your bags, go directly to Magical Express on level B1 and use your MagicBand to check in
If getting your own bags, go to baggage claim and then proceed to Magical Express on level B1 or to your form of transportation (rental car, private car, etc.)
FLYING HOME

Participating airlines include AirTran Airways, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Northwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Air Lines, and US Airways
Take carry ons to luggage services at resort
Magical Express buses will pick you up 3 hours before your flight time (more for international flights) - don't be late

New changes include being able to get more than 3 FastPass+ reservations per day (extras must be obtained at kiosks, though it will eventually be incorporated into My Disney Experience), the option to park hop and have FastPass+ reservations in both parks and being able to use your bonus FastPass+ reservations at the same ride
Issues that could come up with these changes: you must use 3 FastPass+ reservations before getting any extras (and since some FastPass+ reservations are for nighttime fireworks and parades, you won't be using them until the end of the night), FastPass+ reservations will run out for some attractions
For people wanting to park hop, I'd suggest that Hollywood Studios is a good park to begin your day without any FastPass+ reservations, Animal Kingdom is a great park to do later in the day with pre-selected FastPass+ reservations, Epcot can be fairly easy as long as you get a FastPass+ for Soarin' and ride Test Track in the single rider line
ABOUT SEVEN DWARFS MINE TRAIN
Dedication for the media is April 28-May 2
Soft openings could begin over the next couple of weeks
Will have a height requirement of 38" and last for about 2 minutes

There are many FastPass+ options at Magic Kingdom and I would use FastPass+ reservations for things that will take longer such as Enchanted Tales with Belle and Jungle Cruise

When to go - avoid peak times surrounding U.S. holidays, lower crowd times are always going to make it easier to be laid back
Where to stay - choosing an Epcot-area resort or Magic Kingdom-area resort will make it easier to get to and from 1 or 2 of the parks
Make a daily plan - if you don't want to choose parks ahead of time, at least be sure to avoid parks with morning Extra Magic Hours and special events taking place
Making dining choices - to avoid having to make reservations ahead of time, rely on Quick Service restaurants and same-day Table Service reservations (many people cancel 24 hours ahead of time so new options will become available last minute)
Park touring
At Animal Kingdom, make FastPass+ reservations for Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris and 1 other ride (such as Kali River Rapids or DINOSAUR). You can ride Expedition Everest multiple times by making use of the single rider line.
At Epcot, be sure to get a FastPass+ reservation for Soarin' and ride Test Track in the single rider line
For Hollywood Studios, I'd suggest getting FastPass+ for Toy Story Mania, Tower of Terror and Star Tours, and then riding Rock 'n' Roller Coaster in the single rider line
Magic Kingdom is the toughest one so I'd suggest spending at least 2 days there, making use of evening Extra Magic Hours and/or attending the Halloween or Christmas parties (some parties will be busy but most won't) to enjoy the shortest lines
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
If you're getting online or calling 180 days in advance to make Advance Dining Reservations, make them in order of difficulty, not chronological order.

We're going to assume that we're planning a 7 night trip for a family with 2 adults and 2 kids who want a trip that includes a nice hotel and restaurants but staying under $5,000 total for everything.
Here's what I suggest:
Step 1: when to go - you can make your money go further by avoiding the most expensive times of the year which include the last 2 weeks of December, the week surrounding President's Day, Spring Break (the second week of March to mid-April usually), the week before and after Easter and Thanksgiving. People traveling in summer can pay a bit less by visiting the last 2 weeks of August.
Step 2: picking a hotel - I suggest renting DVC points (Animal Kingdom Villas, Boardwalk Villas and Old Key West are the least expensive) or staying at the Swan or Dolphin
Step 3: make a daily plan - plan to kick off the trip with a fun character meal and spend 6 days in the parks (6 day base tickets from Official Ticket Center would run a family of 4 about $1250)
Step 4: choose dining - I would suggest purchasing the Disney Dining Plan and then picking restaurants that maximize the value of a Disney Dining Plan credit such as Akershus breakfast, Chef Mickey's dinner, 'Ohana dinner, Boma dinner, Garden Grill, 1900 Park Fare dinner, Cape May Cafe dinner and Whispering Canyon Cafe
Step 5: plan park touring - same touring principles apply for everybody
To secure your MagicBand (I lost mine on a recent trip!), I suggest ordering a Bitbelt for everybody in your group.
They come in lots of colors and decrease in price if you order more than 1 ($5.99 for 1, 2 for $10, 5 for $20, etc.). These can be used on various fitness bands (like the Fitbit, Nike Fuel Band) but you'll need to order the larger size to fit MagicBands.
Use code "wdwprepschool" at checkout to save 15%.

Perhaps the thing that stresses people out the most about planning Disney World trips is the idea that they'll end up standing in lines for hours on end.

AVOIDING LINES
Most people think of avoiding lines for rides but there are many areas where you could encounter a line.
Here are some of the main areas and how to reduce your wait time.
Resort check-in - people staying on-site should make use of resort check-in up to 60 days ahead of time and then get into the early resort check-in line once arriving at the resort
Dining - even with a reservation, you can encounter long waits at restaurants. Eating at off-peak times (11-11:30, 1:30-3, 4-5:00, 7:30-9) at both Quick Service and Table Service restaurants can really reduce your wait time
Rides/attractions - show up before the parks open, ride the highest priority rides first, use FastPass+ reservations to visit high priority rides later in the day and have a good touring plan. The eBook that I have for sale also comes with printable park maps that indicate which rides to visit at various times of the day.
Transportation - plan to exit the park at the front of the pack after nighttime entertainment, consider taking a taxi if bus lines get long, look into the CLEAR program which is like a FastPass at the airport
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
If little ones can't ride a ride, don't make them just sit and wait for everybody else. Keep them busy doing other things. I have a chart of ideas in my Rider Switch article to keep little ones nearby but busy while bigger kids and adults ride.

To send a letter to your favorite character, address it to your favorite character and use the following address:
Walt Disney World Communications P.O. Box 10040 Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830-0040
Step 1: Choose when to go You can really go anytime but if there are people ages 10 or older who want to dress up as a princess, you should go during a time when Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party is scheduled since they allow everybody to dress up at those parties.
Step 2: Where to stay Little Mermaid rooms at Art of Animation, Royal Rooms at Port Orleans Riverside, and The Grand Floridian all make great resort choices for princess-lovers.
Step 3: Make a daily plan Plan to visit all parks and Downtown Disney if you can.
Step 4: Pick your dining Here are some great princess dining options:
Cinderella's Royal Table (in the castle at Magic Kingdom)
Be Our Guest at Magic Kingdom (Quick Service for lunch, Table Service for dinner - the beast appears at dinner)
Perfectly Princess Tea Party at Grand Floridian
Step 5: Park touring If you plan to meet the princesses, be sure to work those into your touring plans. I recommend using Kenny the Pirate's app for the most accurate character info.
Step 6: Add extra magic Consider making an appointment for a princess makeover at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique (there are 2 locations - 1 in the castle and 1 in Downtown Disney), booking a limo to transport you between the airport and your resort and/or buying an in-room princess celebration from Disney Florist which will include the whole room being decorated.
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
If the princess costumes are too itchy, considering buying an everyday dress inspired by the princesses. The Chasing Mermaids Boutique is a great source for these kinds of dresses.

To prepare kids ahead of time, I suggest not telling kids too far ahead of time but talking about Disney World so they can learn. Watching videos and reading the Birnbaum's for Kids book are great ways to prepare young kids.
Step 1: Choose when to go I recommend going after Halloween but before mid-March when the times have changed because some nighttime entertainment (such as Fantasmic) is offered earlier, making it easier for little ones to stay up later to see it. During busy times like Christmas and Thanksgiving, the parks are open later to accommodate crowds so nighttime entertainment would be scheduled later on those days.
In addition, sometimes discounts are offered during this time, such as the "Families with Little Ones" promotion that covered January and February dates in 2014.
Step 2: Where to stay I recommend Pop Century, Art of Animation, The Polynesian, The Contemporary and Animal Kingdom Lodge for families with little ones.
Step 3: Make a daily plan Families with little ones should primarily focus on Magic Kingdom and maybe even consider skipping Epcot.
Step 4: Pick your dining Character dining (such as Chef Mickey's or Tusker House) can be a great way to introduce kids to characters. I would avoid making too many Table Service dining reservations because it usually takes 60-90 minutes per meal which is a lot of sitting for many young kids.
Step 5: Park touring All of my FastPass+ guides include touring plans for little ones so I would start there. You might want to consider letting kids re-ride things if they really like them.
There's a 40" height requirement on many of the bigger rides. Parents or older kids who want to ride can use Rider Switch to take turns.
My general advice on strollers is that if you still use one at home, you should probably bring it on your trip. Little ones who don't normally use strollers at home will likely still benefit from having one during a Disney World trip so I recommend renting a stroller for those kids.
If you're flying for your trip, make sure you have reserved seats (or boarding group if you're flying Southwest Airlines). Without it, there's a good chance your family will be separated during your flight.

Today, I have a list of 10 things most first-time visitors to Disney World don't know before their trips, including some info to help explain each of these things.
I also have a quick tip about how to know when to book the flights for your trip, especially since prices have gone up the last couple of years so it's hard to know when you're getting a good deal.
These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for a better explanation.

The #1 request I get is for info on things to do at Disney World for adults. I'm in the middle of planning my own adults-only trip and I've got some ideas for you on when to go, where to stay and things to do during an adults-only Disney World trip.
I also have a tip on when to book your trip and how to apply discounts to your reservation.

Following my 6 step planning process, here are my ideas for planning a trip for adults.
Step 1: When to go I suggest late April/early May or September/October for a trip. The crowds are light, the temps are warm enough to enjoy the swimming pool and there are special events happening at Epcot during those times. For more info on when to go, see my chart.
Step 2: Where to stay I have a few ideas for where to stay on-site for adults.
The Boardwalk area - The Beach Club, Yacht Club, Boardwalk Inn, Swan and Dolphin are all located within the Boardwalk area and walking distance to Epcot
Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter are both beautiful resorts with boats that go to Downtown Disney
Animal Kingdom Lodge is a gorgeous resort and a good option for people who like to get away from the hustle and bustle
Step 3: Make your daily plan When making your daily plan and deciding how to divide up your time, I suggest spending more time at Epcot, Downtown Disney, on the Boardwalk, playing a round of mini golf and fitting in a tour (such as the Backstage Safari Tour, Segway tour at Ft. Wilderness or 1 of the holiday tours).
Step 4: Pick your dining options Consider choosing 1 of the finer dining options such as Victoria and Albert's, California Grill, Artist Point, Jiko, Flying Fish or Yachtsman Steakhouse.
Step 5: Plan park touring My general touring plans should work for most adults as they include all of the highlights of all of the parks, including the thrillers.
Step 6: Add extra magic Consider adding some extra touches such as having Disney Florist deliver flowers to the room (or decorate the room) or book a fireworks cruise to view Wishes or Illuminations.
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
You can book your Disney World trip way before discounts are announced. People using a Disney agent (if you submit a request through this site, it'll go straight to my recommended agent) or calling Disney can book up to 500 days in advance and then when discounts are announced, you can have the discount applied to your existing reservation.

Universal is made up of 2 parks (Islands of Adventure and Universal), a shopping area (CityWalk) and 3 on-site resorts (soon to be 4).
People who stay in 1 of the 3 on-site resorts get special perks:
Unlimited Express Passes
On-site transportation
Early admission to Wizarding World of Harry Potter (located at Islands of Adventure)
Priority seating at restaurants
Room charge and package delivery privileges
Express Passes work kind of like FastPasses in that they allow you to enter a separate line. However, you get to enter the line immediately (as opposed to coming back during a 1 hour time frame) and there's no limit to how many you can have in 1 day. Off-site guests can pay to purchase the Express Passes. (Note: although most attractions offer Express Passes, Wizarding World of Harry Potter doesn't.)
To add Universal to a Disney World trip, I suggest spending 2 days there before your time at Disney World. We got through each park in just 1/2 day so ambitious people might be able to do both in the same day.
I don't suggest people with little kids or issues with motion sickness visit Universal because there aren't enough attractions for each to enjoy.
You can review my post about Universal for more info, including touring plans to use in each park.
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
You can rent a car when staying at an on-site Disney World resort which can be helpful when spending some time at places outside of Disney World (like Universal, the beach, etc.).
Alamo and National have offices at the on-site Disney World Car Care Center. They will send a shuttle to your Disney World resort to take you to get your car. The number for the Car Care Center is 407-824-3470.

Many of these fall into a grey area where some people may decide that they are ethical and others will decide that they aren't. Disney allows all of these things so decide for yourself if they make sense for you.
1. Quick Service credits aren't divided between adults and kids Although Table Service credits are split between kids and adults, Quick Service credits aren't. That means that you can order adult meals at Quick Service restaurants for your children.
2. Rainforest Cafe at Animal Kingdom has its own entrance There's a gift shop inside Rainforest Cafe that has its own entrance into Animal Kingdom. If the main gates seem busy, you can check out the Rainforest Cafe entrance to see if it's less crowded.
(Updated 2/3/2015: this is no longer available) 3. You can get a FastPass+ reservation at Be Our Guest even if you aren't invited Disney has a FastPass+ to eat lunch at Be Our Guest but they will tell you that it's by invitation only. The fact is that it's available to anybody.
You can get the reservation by visiting https://beourguestlunch.disney.go.com/. You will need your 12-digit numeric confirmation number (not the alphanumeric confirmation number) which can be found in your My Disney Experience account before MagicBands ship, on Magical Express luggage tags and in some emails that Disney sends.
These open up about a month beforehand so reservations for March will open up in mid-February.
4. Off-site guests can make on-site reservations to take advantage of some perks People staying off-site often want to take advantage of on-site benefits such as Extra Magic Hours or being able to make FastPass+ reservations 60 days in advance. One way to do that is with a reservation for a campsite at Ft. Wilderness. The reservation works for up to 9 people.
People who stay at Ft. Wilderness are not a fan of these "phantom bookings" but other people will argue that when you pay for the spot, it's up to you how you use it.
5. Valet for $25/day at any Deluxe Resort(Updated 10/3/2015 - valet prices changed) All Disney World Deluxe Resorts have valet parking available for $25/day. The non-valet parking has a limit of about 3 hours. This is especially convenient if you have a breakfast reservation at a resort and want to keep your car there as opposed to re-parking in another parking lot.
As long as you have your valet tag or receipt, you can valet anywhere on-site all day without paying any extra (though you should tip at each location).
Note: in the podcast, I said that on-site guests get free parking for up to 3 hours. I should have clarified that I meant when parking at other resorts. On-site guests using the general parking at the theme parks can park there all day.
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
When making FastPass+ reservations 60 days in advance, you can begin at midnight eastern time(Updated May 19, 2016: it's now 7 a.m. eastern time). This is different than dining reservations which begin at 6 a.m. eastern time 180 days in advance.

There are a couple dozen on-site resorts at Disney World. I often share matter-of-fact info on each but today, I'm telling you my favorites in each category.
I also have a quick tip about how to get Disney Dollars before your trip.
These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for a better explanation.
WDW Prep To Go Patrons pay a little to unlock even more content than what’s on the main podcast feed, such as a private FB Group and exclusive audio that’s released on a private podcast feed.
Value Resorts My favorite Value Resorts are Pop Century and Art of Animation. Both have direct buses between the resorts and parks which makes them more convenient than any of the All-Star resorts.
Pop Century is often the least expensive option on-site. Art of Animation has suites for families of up to 6 that include 3 beds, 2 bathrooms and a kitchenette. The non-suite rooms in the Little Mermaid section are usually excluded from promotions.
I recommend booking a Preferred room at Pop Century to be closer to the main building. At Art of Animation, I recommend requesting a room close to the main building because Preferred rooms aren't available.
Moderate Resorts Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter are sister resorts that are within walking distance of each other. Both are beautifully themed and complement each other nicely where the shortcomings of one are strengths of the other.
For instance, the transportation at Port Orleans Riverside is often not great but guests can use the Port Orleans French Quarter transportation instead. Another example is that Port Orleans French Quarter doesn't have as many amenities because it's a small resort but guests can walk over to Port Orleans Riverside to take advantages of things like an on-site restaurant there.
I recommend getting a Preferred room at Port Orleans Riverside to be closer to the main building. Port Orleans French Quarter is small enough that Preferred rooms aren't available or necessary.
Deluxe Resorts My favorite Deluxe Resorts are The Polynesian and The Beach Club. Both are beach-themed, have convenient access to 2 of the 4 parks, have great on-site restaurants and easy access to nearby resorts.
People wanting to be closer to Magic Kingdom should choose The Polynesian. People who want easy access to Epcot should choose The Beach Club.
The Polynesian has some construction going on this year so I wouldn't advise it for 2014.
Disney Vacation Club resort Most of the Disney Vacation Club properties are attached to Deluxe Resorts but I wanted to mention Old Key West as a standalone DVC property that has studios with more square footage and 2 queen beds instead of a queen bed and a sofa bed.
To learn how to rent DVC points, check out my article on how that works.
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
Disney Dollars is paper money that works like gift cards and used to be more widely available but now they're only available in the theme parks or you can get them by calling 407-566-4985, press option 2 and then option 3.
WDW Prep To Go Patrons pay a little to unlock even more content than what’s on the main podcast feed, such as a private FB Group and exclusive audio that’s released on a private podcast feed.
Wolfgang Puck Express, located in Downtown Disney. 1 pizza costs just 1 Quick Service credit and it's delicious.
Columbia Harbour House, inside Magic Kingdom. I recommend the Anchors Aweigh Tuna Sandwich and looking for a spot to sit upstairs.
Be Our Guest lunch, at Magic Kingdom. Line up at 10:30 or 1:30 to avoid the long lines or use the quick tip of the day (info on that below) to skip lines.
Sunshine Seasons, inside the same building as Soarin' Epcot. Large food court-style eating area with a variety of food. It can get busy so I suggest having 1 person find seating while everybody else orders if you can.
Flame Tree Barbecue, located at Animal Kingdom. Great barbecue platters and seating in pavilions with nice views of the water.
My 5 favorite Table Service restaurants
Le Cellier, located in the Canada section of Epcot. Really love the cheese soup, pretzel bread, beer and steak here. This is not a great value on the Disney Dining Plan since it costs 2 Table Service credits.
Boma, at Animal Kingdom Lodge. African buffet with fantastic soups, desserts and a chance to sample many types of entrees.
Restaurant Marrakesh, in the Morocco section of Epcot. Music, belly dancer, chance to sample foods. People paying out-of-pocket might want to opt for lunch since it's less expensive and a very similar menu as dinner.
Ohana, located at The Polynesian. American-style foods with characters at breakfast and great meats and fun atmosphere at dinner.
Biergarten, in the Germany section of Epcot. German buffet, live band, dance floor, seating is with other people.
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
People staying on-site can make a FastPass+ reservation at Be Our Guest for lunch to avoid the lines. Reservations often become available about a month beforehand. You'll need the 12 digit numeric confirmation number (often found on Magical Express luggage tags, emails from Disney and in your Disney account before MagicBands are shipped) and then you can go to https://beourguestlunch.disney.go.com/ to make that reservation.

FastPass+ is a super hot topic right now as all of Disney World officially converts from the old legacy FastPass system to the new system as of this week.
Today, I'll talk about how to use FastPass+ for both on-site and off-site guests.
I also have a quick tip about who should buy Park Hopper tickets.
These are notes from this episode. There's much more info included in the audio so be sure to listen to the episode for a better explanation.

FastPass+ is the new system being used by Disney World that replaces the old paper-based FastPass system. The new system is digital and allows people to make 3 FastPass+ reservations per day in 1 park (so if you plan to park hop, you have to choose which park to get FastPass+ reservations in).
HOW TO MAKE FASTPASS+ RESERVATIONS
On-site guests can make FastPass+ reservations up to 60 days before their trip begins using the My Disney Experience website, the app or at the kiosks in the parks.
Off-site guests can make FastPass+ reservations at kiosks in the parks after arriving. I suggest writing everybody's names on the tickets so you know who has which reservations. The kiosks don't print out the reservation info so you will have the option to email it to yourself, write it down, take a picture of the screen or view it in the My Disney Experience app (you can view but not edit).
When you're making FP+ reservations, the system will give you 3 (even if you only request 1 or 2). After giving you times for each, you can go into individual FastPass+ reservations and edit the times if you'd like.
STRATEGIES FOR MAKING FASTPASS+ RESERVATIONS
Choose the attractions that are higher priority and avoid low-priority attractions that don't require it.
Epcot and Hollywood Studios only allow you to choose 1 FP+ from the top tier and 2 FP+ from the second tier. Here are the tiers for each park:
Hollywood Studios Tier 1
Toy Story Midway Mania!
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster
Fantasmic!
Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage
Tier 2
Voyage of the Little Mermaid
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Star Tours - The Adventures Continue
The Great Movie Ride
Muppetvision 3D
Disney Junior – Live on Stage
Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!
Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show
Epcot Tier 1
IllumiNations
Character Spot
Soarin’
Test Track
Tier 2
Captain EO
Journey into Imagination with Figment
Living with the Land
Mission: SPACE
Spaceship Earth
The Seas with Nemo & Friends
Turtle Talk with Crush
Make your FastPass+ reservations for late morning at the earliest and use the first couple of hours to tour without FastPass+.
You can't make FastPass+ reservations for the same thing twice. You can make a FP+ reservation, ride it and then edit one of your remaining FP+ reservations to be that ride again (as long as there are still times available). You may also choose to make a FP+ reservation for a ride, show up when the park opens to ride it and then ride again with FastPass+.
USING FASTPASS+ RESERVATIONS
On-site guests use MagicBands to check in to rides for their FP+ reservations.
Off-site guests use their park ticket to check in for FP+ reservations.
Show up during your reservation window (there's some leeway on the times but just a few minutes).
One person in your group will scan at the first scanners at an attraction and each person will need to scan at the second scanners.
If the standby line is short, get into the standby line and then change your FastPass+ reservation to something else if there's something else you'd rather use it for.
Rider Switch (sometimes called Child Swap) is still in use so that families with little ones can still ride bigger rides. Read my Rider Switch article for details on how that works.
ADVANTAGES OF FASTPASS+
On-site guests can book ahead of time
Off-site guests can book all 3 FP+ reservations at once instead of running around the parks for each ride
There are more FastPass+ opportunities. Some are ridiculous but others are nice to have like early entry to shows.
Ability to change FastPass+ reservations to a new time or attraction
DISADVANTAGES OF FASTPASS+
Limit of 3 FP+ per day which is particularly an issue at Magic Kingdom and for people who want to park hop
The tiers at Epcot and Hollywood Studios can be a disadvantage since you can't get FP+ for more than 1 top tier ride
Requires planning ahead
Off-site guests having to use kiosks could lead to long lines at the kiosks
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
People staying at Boardwalk/Epcot-area resorts (Beach Club, Yacht Club, Swan, Dolphin and Boardwalk) should think about buying Park Hopper tickets to take advantage of being so close to Epcot. Consider spending the first part of the day at another park and then head over to Epcot in the evenings to eat at a restaurant and explore a few of the countries.

There are always things that happen during Disney World trips that are less-than-ideal and people traveling during the first part of the year often have to handle more of that than anybody else.
Today, we'll talk about how to deal with closures, refurbishments and other disappointments during Disney World trips.
I also have a quick tip about shopping for Disney World trips when it's not summer where you live.
People traveling in the first part of 2014 are having to put up with a lot of changes at Disney World which include:
The normal refurbishments that take places this time of year
Festival of the Lion King being closed for 6 months (reopening in summer 2014)
Magic Kingdom monorail closures from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. on weekdays beginning January 21 until the end of March (the Epcot monorail will remain open like normal)
Construction at The Polynesian as a new DVC section is built
Miyuki the candy maker retired
The afternoon parade at Magic Kingdom is gone (the new one will open mid-March)
FastPass+ is being rolled out fully this month to all guests - including those staying off-site - and legacy FastPass machines are being removed
So how do you deal with all of that?
Well, here are a few ideas:
Attitude. "There are 2 ways to be happy: improve your reality or lower your expectations" is a quote I recently came across and it's a good strategy when approaching a Disney World trip that might have some disappointments. Parents in particular should make sure to frame everything in a positive way to help kids see it that way.
Make new plans. If necessary, change your plans a bit. You might consider renting a car, switching to a different hotel or changing your trip dates.
Focus on other things. Take the time you would have been doing something that will be closed (like seeing Festival of the Lion King) to do something else you might not have (like seeing Finding Nemo - The Musical).
Research and stay flexible. Know as much as you can ahead of time about the changes and then make a plan but stay flexible during your trip.
QUICK TIP OF THE DAY
Is it cold where you are but you're headed to warm Florida for a trip? It's likely that your local Target isn't selling shorts, swimsuits and personal misting fans then. If you need to buy some of those things, be sure to look on eBay which often has a good assortment year round.
